Well I decided to pull the trigger on a MK4 during the 50% sale. This will be my 6th Factory five build and 4th personal one. I have built a 33, 3-818's and a Type 65. I currently have my Coupe for sale but I have a good feeling it is closing on a sale soon. I pick up my kit on 1/30/16 or there about. I will be scanning the build threads here. I look forward to help as I did on my other builds and maybe offer some of my ideas as well. When I was at FFR this summer my wife sat in several MK4's that were in the showroom. She really liked how much easier they were to get in and out of compared to the coupe. Being the thoughtful husband I am I told her I would sell the coupe and build a MK4 for her. She had a Miata and misses the open top driving.
Here is what I am starting with and as always will most likely spend 25% more than I wanted to. LOL. I did save a ton buying on the 50% sale though.
MK4 complete kit, I bought a 93 5.0 out of a Mustang GT from Prestige Mustang as well as a T-5 and 3:27 rear end all for $1700.00.
ceramic headers
Chrome roll bars, I will basically build the engine the same as my Coupe. I will add A/C and other goodies from FFR vendors.
Chrome bumpers
3-link
Powder coat chassis
T-5 setup
302 mounts
wind wings
sun visors
floor mats
brake mesh
grommets
side louver
17" wheels
big & tall leather seats
GPS gauge set
body cut outs
11.65 rear disc's
soft top
extra side mirror
power steering kit, I look forward to doing this build. I am still waiting on parts to finish my customers Electric 818, so I will bounce back and forth putting emphasis on finishing the 818.
Lucky you the way the Canadien dollars is dropping I think my built is jeopardize

I look forward to reading about your MK4 build. Looks like the soft top option is not part of the 50/50 which is too bad given the stout price.

Well My Type 65 Coupe has sold. I am fortunate that the buyer is allowing me to deliver his new Coupe on the 27th of this month. This will allow me to make one trip to deliver the coupe and pick up my MK4 kit from FFR. I loaded up the coupe already and have started ordering the stuff to build my MK4. I bought a good used 5.0 engine, T-5 and 8.8 with 3:27 rear gears from Prestige Mustang for $1700.00. They completely went through the trans and resealed it with all new seals. I am basically only using the short block of the engine. I will rering it and install new bearings and freeze plugs. I bought a new flywheel and clutch kit from Carolina Clutch. I am installing a new 5 lug axle kit and rear diff cover from Summit. I will clean up everything and paint it like new. I am going with all new Trick flow top end and eldebrock Dual quad setup. I will be installing A/C from North race cars, Rad shroud, steering wheel hub, front battery kit and quiet pipes from Breeze Automotive. I will be using Vintage Air's new Front runner drive kit for the front of the engine. I really look forward to this build. I hope the weather is kind during my trip. I go to OK then Wareham then back to FL.

While I am waiting for the 26th to leave to deliver my coupe to its new owner. I started on the donor stuff for my MK4. Here is pics of what I got from Prestige mustang. I will strip all down, inspect and rebuild everything needed to make them as good as new. All came from a very low mileage 93 Mustang GT convertible. Engine ran perfect before it was pulled. We opened up the trans and it was like new inside. Same with the 8.8 rear. I also started ordering all the new stuff as well. I like to have everything needed for the build before I have the kit. It makes for such a quicker build IMO. It is no fun waiting on parts. Ask me how I know, LOL.

Ran into a few problems today. On teardown of engine it seems someone had been inside of it and had pistons all in the wrong places. It ran fine but I am not happy with what I saw. Trans has a slight crack in the case I did not see before either. I am sending both back for refund. The good news is the rear end is OK. I ended up getting a rebuilt short block and new Ford Racing T-5 from summit. Throws my budget off some but at least I will feel comfortable with the parts. I should have all my donor stuff here in next few days and will be able to really get going on drivetrain this week coming up. It is like X-mas with the UPS guy the last few days. LOL.

Wow, sorry to hear about the engine, and the trans as well. Glad you got to see it, and early enough that there shouldn't be any pushback from Prestige.
I am sure the Summit parts will be rock solid; even if the budget gets a bit bloodied.
I have enjoyed watching your builds, and I look forward to this one as well.

Delivered the Coupe yesterday to Joe in Grove,OK. He was a very happy man! Now I am heading to State College, PA. to visit my brother Curt. Then up to FFR for a Friday pick up of my MK4. Marsha says boxes from Summit keep showing up at home. I told her it just car parts, LOL. I have avoided all the snow so far and it looks like clear sailing for me. God has been good to me on this trip. Very little traffic and nice roads. Like a dope I left my camera cable at home so pics will have to wait till I get home.

Made it home safe today. Over 4K miles in about a week. Got to spend some time with the FFR staff and Dave Smith on Friday. Everyone there is so nice. Thanks Sally for my FFR swag! Got the kit loaded up and headed home . Stopped by Herb Fraser's to get 2 door panels. Nice guy. Stopped at a rest stop in WV and guess what was in parking lot? Stewart transport. I am going to decompress and do inventory tomorrow. Here is some pics.

On Monday I was able to inventory everything. Very large POL list but only one thing missing that was supposed to be in one box. This is my 6th FFR build and would like to pass on some things that I do that helps with the build IMO. When inventorying boxes with shocks and rod end and such I assemble them right away and put in box. This helps speed up things but also allowed me to catch wrong rod ends sent in the box. If you only count the parts you could get to assembly later to find out you have 4 LH thread and no RH thread ends. Ask me how I know this. LOL. For the most part FFR does a great job, but they are human. Do inventory ASAP and get your list of missing stuff to FFR so they can make it right ASAP. Just my 2 cents. I also cover car with HF moving blankets so boxes in trailer on trip do not scratch the body so much.

Today my wife Marsha helped me get the car out of the trailer. We used 2 HF furniture dollies and just rolled it out. I then had some of my hot rod buddies come over and we separated the body from the chassis and put it on the body buck I had made. Since I have now 2 builds going on I had to use my 4-post lift to store the body and some boxes. I will work on the chassis underneath. I hope to be getting parts for my 818E build soon to finish that for my customer. But I have the MK4 to keep me out of trouble, LOL. I have about 95% of what I need to finish the MK4 so parts will not be the problem with it.

Finished up engine. I had to see it with carbs and headers on. This thing does have the bling, LOL. I will take them off for install. I finished up my 8.8. I always use Vintage Performance's 3-link extra brace. Cheap insurance IMO. I hope to get trans and all on engine tomorrow and start on chassis soon.

Kit going together very easily. I sure do miss my 2-post lift, LOL. I guess this is how a lot of folks build theirs. Here is some pics.

I finished up the Wilwood pedal box. I like to use Russ Thompson's pedals. I also mounted the gas tank. Still waiting on B/O sender and gas line insert. I mocked up and drilled for both foot boxes. I will remove them and coat the outside with Lizard skin sound deadener and ceramic heat coating. Then the inside will get Eastwood thermocoustic covering. This is not the most astatically pleasing covering for them but it works very well in keeping the heat out of the cockpit. I do this to all the aluminum panels on the outside. Acts as a stone resistant covering as well. I most likely will make heat shields like I did for my Type 65 in the front of the foot boxes.

The last 2 days I mocked up and drilled most of the interior aluminum. I am going to use North Racecars E-Brk so I removed the FFR brace and filled in the void. I also cut off the tab in the back near the gas tank straps I do not use in the complete kit. I also temped in the dash. I posted a separate question about the dash panel. Manual is very vague IMO on the mounting of the dash. I am going to make mine removable for ease of repair on gauges if needed when finished.

The last 2 days I finished up mocking up and drilling the trunk area aluminum and mounted my North Racecars E-Brk. I really prefer this over the Manual location. I also mocked up the North Racecars A/C box for the firewall. This required me to move the brace for the top curved bar. I welded a new one in place before cutting out the old one. No movement that way, LOL. I also made a firewall brace off of the new bar. I made sure no interference with gauges. Yesterday I coated everything with Lizard Skin sound deadener. Today did the Ceramic heat coating. I can start installing the stuff on the chassis on Monday now. here are some pics.

Would that A/C box create any interference issues with the engine? How about a windshield wiper kit? It doesn't look like it leaves enough room to mount the motor.

Carlos According to the directions it does not interfere with either though it is a tight fit. You have to modify the wiper some but I am not using a wiper. Time will tell. I should be installing the engine next week sometime. Here is a picture that came with the kit. The picture is not my kit though.

Installed most of the aluminum I coated today as well as mounted Brake fluid reservoir. I powder coated a few parts. I used this hunting portable ground blind to do my powder coating in. It contains the mess, LOL. Only cost me 69 bucks. My wife Marsha found it for me on sale. She is an avid deer hunter and keeps us in venison all year long. I had to modify the Wilwood assembly some. The clutch cable hit it when the pedal was depressed in 2 areas. One right on top and the other everyone knows about by the frame on the pedal itself. Die grinder fixed both on 5 minutes.

I have been a busy man the last few days. I did all my brake lines as well as my fuel pump, filter and line to the front. I am waiting on my front brakes from FFR so cannot finish the brakes just yet. I dropped in the engine. Way easier than the coupe, IMO. Lots of room for A/C and everything else. I am not going to remote mount the O/F. I see no need for that, IMO. I am going to use Breeze Automotive front battery mount as well as their upper and lower radiator mounts as well. I also got a rad shroud from them via Mike Everson. Working on the 2-post lift is so much easier for this old guy, LOL.

Over the last 2 days I was able to run my wiring harness, finish up the trunk aluminum and mount the battery and radiator. I really like the Breeze battery kit as well as their radiator mounts and top coolant pipe. Really nice stuff, IMO. I decided to mount the battery in the center instead of the pass. side. I am also going to use the FFR lower hose setup to the rad. vs the Breeze lower tube. I try my best to use FFR vendors in all my builds. I also am using Ron Francis fan control relays . They seem to work well for me when I am using an A/C system. Mounted the rad at 51 degrees using my HF angle gauge. I hope some B/O stuff starts coming in. I would like to go-cart in 7-10 days.

Yes. It is Lizard skin. 1st you have to apply the sound coating then the ceramic coating on top of that after allowing the first coat to dry for 24 hours. In the past I just used a roller. This time I bought the special sprayer for it. The finish is slightly better with the gun but not really worth the added expense IMO. I have used this on all my builds with great results, IMO. I have not ever had heat problems in my cockpit from engine or exhaust heat using this stuff on the outside and Eastwood thermocoustic on the inside.

Fits very nicely. I am making my own drain lines with aluminum tubing and my own Evap. mounts as well. I also put some edge guard for the wiring to the dash where it passes through the firewall. On Saturday and some today I worked on the dash area. I mocked up the center console, A/C vents, A/C controls, Heater cable, Ignition switch and various dash stuff. I am using Mike Everson's Replicaparts lower dash trim as well as steering column cover. Look up his vendor site he has some great stuff! I trimmed out the trim piece to fit my A/C install and painted it with black wrinkle paint. I the mocked up the dash and welded up the removable steering wheel adapter from Breeze Automotive. I then covered it with Marine grade black vinyl. I am also using Ron Francis turn signal switches. ( Nice units IMO, they light up so no need for indicator lights.) I mounted my dash with 5 screws into brackets and 7 screws to the lower dash trim part. This will allow for removal anytime without taking off body.

Mostly did wiring of the dash and console. I have everything wired and working except the missing head light switch. (hint, hint FFR) I did install some sound deadening and thermal barriers. I used Eastwoods new X-Mat in the foot boxes and thermocoustic every where else mostly. I did mount my seats and used a slider on the drivers side so my Lovely wife Marsha can drive it easier. Cut 2 of 4 speaker holes and had music come out of radio. Sorta running out of stuff due to PLO stuff not here yet. I put an email to Courtnie, I hope she can do some magic, LOL.

Friday I finished up my drivers foot box, fixed the fuel sender and got the chassis ready to mount the body. Then I got my body off the top of my 4-post lift and knocked off the high spots on the body seams. On Saturday morning I had Dave, Bernie, Marsha and I put the body on the chassis. It went super easy. Very easy to line it up and get it square. I cut out my hood and mocked up the scoop. Then I gapped the hood. Here is how I do it. I basically use Eric Hanson's method. I lay down the hood on the car and use 3/16" tape to mark my gap to the body on the hood. Then I take a black magic market and trace around the tape. This leaves a mark to use my belt sander to gap the hood. When the red is gone up to the marker it is right. Very easy and quick. I then mounted the hood brackets and such. I need to fix those some how they are a little to loose for my taste as the manual says as far as assembly. This kit is by far much easier than the 33, 818 or type 65 IMO.

Today I finished up the hood latches, Mounted the windshield, Mounted and gapped the trunk lid, mounted all the rear lights and wired them up and tested them. On the windshield I had to open up the holes FFR cut some more. I used the covers as a template to show how much wiggle room I had. I also had to shorten the passenger side arm of the windshield about 1.5". It was hitting the foot box. I took my Breeze Automotive quiet pipes to get ceramic coated Permachrome by Performance Coatings in Jonesboro GA. on Monday. I got good news most of my B/O stuff except for the steering rack, shifter and drive shaft should be here on Thursday. I hope the rest is not far behind.

Wallace,
Did you have to do any trimming on the doors or was it done by adjustments at the body and the hinge?
I plan to get the body on for the first time either Sunday or Monday to start the process of cleaning it up to run gelcoat this summer.
Thanks

All of that. I had to trim them to even get them in the hole first. Then I mounted to hinges and adjusted them. Then I marked for my gap and sanded down to get my gaps. Also had to cut some out for striker as well. Most times you end up installing and removing various parts several times to get fit correct.

Last Thursday evening Some of my B/O stuff came FedEx from FFR. On Friday morning I had the tires mounted and balanced on the 17" rims. Nitto NT555 G2's. I was judging a car show all weekend so finally got to work on it some today. The calipers came so I was able to finish up the brakes. I had Marsha help me bleed them. I mounted the headlights and front turn signals and wired/tested them. I temp. mounted the driver's seat also. Still need steering rack, drive shaft and shifter. I hope to get them soon.

Today I mounted the front and rear bumpers as well as the side mirrors. I changed things up on the rear bumper mounting. I was not fond of dropping my gas tank every time to get the body off. I used all thread the correct length for the rear bumper. I then threaded it to the uprights, locked them in place with a lock nut. Then just put the whole assembly on the car and now only have 4 shouldered lock nuts to remove the bumper and take off the body in the back for paint and anything else. I have some pics of what I did. One shows the thread on the inside where the nut will go.

Today I mocked up the fender splash panels. I also made extra ones in the rear wheel wells towards the front. There is a large gap to the interior there. Same as my Type 65 Coupe. I made similar panels for it. This way less dirt and debris get in the crevices. I am going to Jonesboro GA to get my side pipes from the ceramic coater tomorrow.

I also install Mike Everson's front radiator aluminum after I modify it to fit with my A/C . http://replicaparts.com/ I also made a piece to fix the gap at the top of the radiator to the body.
I also modified the center caps so they stay in place on the wheel using 8/32 screws. I did not like how the center caps flopped around. I also wondered about trying to get the spinners off if corrosion set in. I think this as well as anti-seize fixes the problem IMO.

Yesterday I got an email from Courtnie at FFR. It was both good and bad news. The good is my steering rack and exh. hardware will be here on Wed. The bad is my drive shaft won't be here till April and shifter till May. Once I get the rack installed and finished up the P/S hoses I can start the engine. Also I can align the car. I will then strip non-essentials off and take it to Huegenics for paint. Once we take the body off for paint I will finish up the chassis, carpet and etc. Today I mocked up the soft top. Very nice unit from Rod Tops. After watching FFR videos and reading instruction manual it went on in 30 minutes. I guess about 5 minutes to take it off and 10 to install from now on. Yes it does fit in the trunk and still room for 2 fold up chairs. I also mocked up the side vents, rear view mirror and heats shields. I like the shields from Finish line, Nice stuff they have.
Taking a few days off till parts come in. Here is some pics.

Yesterday my header to side pipe wedges from Breeze Automotive came in. These allowed me to get the side pipes in correct alignment and equal to each other. Nice stuff. I really like the FFR support on the side pipes. Not sure why anyone would delete them. Heat shields from Finish line complete the pipes IMO. Steering rack should be here late tomorrow. Here is some pics. I hope it helps you out. I used the bolts that came with the FFR seat track kit to mount the tracks to the seat. I then slid the tracks to the full back position and mounted the seat as far back as I could. I then marked the holes and install 5/16" riv-nuts in the frame and used 5/16" S/S Allen head bolts. Then with the front bolts installed I moved the seat as far forward as possible and marked the holes. Then I repeated what I did in the front. You can get the riv-nuts from McMaster-Carr.

Well late last night the steering rack from FFR came. Unfortunately for me they sent 2 pressure side P/S hoses and no return hose. I ended up going to a boneyard to get one. After fixing a small fuel leak, oil leak and P/S leak I was able to time and setup the engine. I am super happy with the quiet pipes I got from Breeze. I also am happy with the engine components I used in the build. It really runs great. I can not wait to try it out on the road. But with no drive shaft that won't happen for a while. Car is going to Huegenics for paint on Tuesday. Here is a short video.

Me neither BUT consider eliminating one of the bolts attaching the hangers to the pipe tabs. With both clamped tightthe twisting motion as the engine moves often rips the tab from the pipe...I've seen it on both the mild and stainless steel. One bolt snugged, but not tightly clamped, will support the weight but not introduce the fatigue from twisting. Never had one break doing them this way.
I agree on the Breeze wedges. I've used them on a couple of roadsters and like all of Mark's products they work exactly as intended :)

Now I hope Huegenics can take the car on Tuesday. They are slammed right now but hope to get a few cars gone by Tuesday. I also just set my grills in place and took a pic. Stopped by Huegenics today. They have made some good progress in a short time. They basically started in the back and are working forward on the body. The trunk area is done and now working on the doors and openings. I really like the way they have made the top of the doors wider for my shoulders. This should be a option for the MK4 IMO. It is very tight with the stock doors IMO. They hope to be pulling the body off in 7-10 days for primer then paint. I will be there with my body buck and help. Then bring the chassis home to finish up interior and other detail items on the chassis. One picture shows the door cut out with the foam installed before the resin and fiberglass mat. The other is already glassed and waiting to sand out.

Cobalt Blue pearl with Bright silver metallic stripes. It will be a special one off version of these basic colors custom blended by Chris at Huegenics. I have been fortunate in the 2 previous 302 builds I did not have that problem. I do only put 1" in the res. when cold. That allows for expansion better.

I was able to go-cart the chassis yesterday. While it drove fine, handled great and stopped well there was a strange noise from the engine. It seems something in the bottom end let go. It is a new ATK short block so it is under warranty. It is just a hassle to remove it and tear down everything. At least it is easier with the body off. Normally I build all my engines myself. I did not build this bottom end and unfortunately some thing has gone wrong with it. Oil pressure and temperature were all fine. Oh well that is how the ball bounces some times. LOL.

That is tough about the engine ... hopefully it could be something simple like a loose oil pickup although you would think that would cause oil pressure problems...PS I love your attitude about it; I would be going crazy.
I noticed in you photo that you expanded the outside panel of your DS foot box. How much did you expand it? I have heard both that there is no room or there is little room to get the body/door alignment right at the front of the door. It sounds like you have overcome that issue.

Well it sounded good till it spun #8 rod bearing. Never had engine over 4k RPM or car over 40MPH. ATK short block lasted about 20 minutes run time total. Summit and ATK are giving me a full refund. I am buying the parts from Summit to build a Dart 347 from scratch. That way I can be sure everything is correct and not have to rely on someone else to do it right. It is a PITA but in the long run it will be OK. Lucky for me it happened now with body off. I can have it all back together before paint is done on body. The Vintage Air Front Runner system allowed me to remove A/C, P/S and all without disconnecting hoses. So I saved some time and money there. Well worth the money IMO.

After going back and forth with Summit and ATK on the short block they sold me that went and spun #8 rod bearing, we came to agreement on what to do. They are going to give me full refund on the ATK short block, the 50 oz. flywheel and harmonic balancer. I agreed to pay the difference for a Blueprint 347 Stroker crate engine, 28oz. flywheel and balancer. No shipper or return charges as far as freight. They said the engine has been run on a dyno and will come with documentation. That makes me feel better about it vs the ATK unit. I was hoping to cut a deal on components from Dart, but the extra cost and all was a bit more than I wanted to spend. Summit has treated me right on this IMO. The engine will be here this week so I should have the go-cart ready to go by Friday. I cleaned up my parts that will go on the new crate motor and decided to redo the valve covers. I used wrinkle paint and I like the result vs what I did the 1st go round.

Hi, Tom; I have a question about your dash. I see in one view (well back in your build sequence) that the top of your dash appears even with the curved 3/4" hoop, but the fasteners seem to be lower. Did you make brackets which hang below the dash? My Challenge Mk4 should be here in a couple of weeks, but am going to install the dash on my (street) 3.1 very soon. I had thought that the dash was supposed to be a bit above the hoop to prevent an obvious gap. Please give me a schoolin' on this.
Many thanks,
Bill

Yes I trimmed it even with the top of the bar and made brackets out of aluminum so the dash can be removed with the body in place. The body comes over the bar so if you used the bar to mount the dash the screws would be hidden behind the body. This would mean you may have to remove the body to get the dash off if ever needed. Here is some pictures with the body on. Hope this explanation helps.

It does help, Tom; thanks. Earlier threads suggested that there would be a visually apparent gap between where the body rolls over at the top and the top of the dash if the 3/4" bar was used as the reference point for trimming/mounting. Based on your experience, that's not so. This makes mounting the dash much easier. Also, I'm with you; it needs to be removable. Given the contortionist activities required to access what's behind there without the option of removing the dash, that's especially true as we get a little older!
Great build thread; thanks.

Sorry - had one more quickie; I can't find the door/truck/hood gapping technique described by Eric Hansen that you reference in your build thread. Very clear how you are approaching taping, marking and then grinding to the line, but, since the hood, doors and trunk and hood are not consistently off by the width of the tape, not clear regarding how you achieve the consistent gap. I was going to use a scribe, offset by a fixed amount, to reference off of the body edge to scribe the hood, for example. Can you point me to that info?
Thanks again.

My shifter finally came in the other day. It was the last of my back ordered parts, Yea! I installed it with my Lokar boot and Breeze shift knob. I really think the knob is super cool! Body should be done and ready for the chassis by the 9th. I am crossing my fingers, LOL.

Tom-
She is looking sharp! I really like the center console below the dash. I really like the heat/AC vents there. I think that make a lot of sense putting those there. I have been struggling with ideas where to locate my vents (just in the planning stages), and I may hijack your idea.
I like the shift knob too. Where did you source that -- sorry if I missed it!
I look forward to seeing the rest of your paint done.

I changed my mind and decided to listen to Carlos. I bought a different reservoir bottle and remove the FFR tank from the header area. I got this one on E-Bay( It is your fault Jim, LOL.) . I also got my replacement windshield on Sat. I removed the frame and ground down the sun visor screws. You can see the before and after. Do yourself a favor and just loosen the frame and mount the sun visor clips so you do not crack the windshield like I did. Went to Huegenics today around noon. I bought lunch for everyone and then they showed me my MK4. WOW!!! The Cobalt blue pearl and silver stripes are awesome to me. I really like how the stripes are done. I am not a fan of the wrap around ones. Just my personal preference, LOL. I spent the rest of the day mounting the scoop, grills, latches, defrost vents and such. First thing tomorrow it goes on the chassis. The paint really pops in the sun. Everyone at the shop cannot wait to see this completed. It is their first MK4. They have done a 33, Type 65 and 818 for me in the past. They somehow top every job they have done before. Here is some pics.

In the picture in which you are showing the side louvers, what are those four "things" that look as if they are protruding through the body?
The stripes are ok. They have a "Yenko" feel to them.

I ordered my kit in December and had it delivered the first week of May. I had to wait until it was warm enough to work in my garage... and get some other projects done first. While I was waiting yours was one of the threads I followed as my build plan is very similar. I am at the point where I need to order my powertrain and I have been seriously considering the Blueprint 306 with Al heads or the 331 with iron heads as both are within $100 of each other. I am somewhat skeptical of the claimed 390hp from the 306. It seems a little high for 9.5:1 compression ratio and not too radical of a cam. But, I'm not really looking for a monster engine, more of a streetable cruiser. So maybe i'm better off with the 331??
I was wondering what you had to do to the oil pan, dip stick, and pickup? The Blueprint crate engines all seem to come in a rear sump configuration. Was this a big issue for you? Also I am interested in what you did for a your accessory drive. Being in NE Ohio I'm adding heater/defroster but I see you did A/C. I'm planning power steering so the belt system is something I also need to sort out. I love the dual quads, but that would be a second carb that I would have to dial in.
Thanks for the thread.

I would go with the 331 if it was me. More cubes is always better. Though these cars are fast with a stock 302, IMO. I went with the Vintage air front runner system, A little pricey but well worth it IMO. There is no problem with any type of sump. It is all clear underneath. There are tons of options for your belt setup. Check out Summit or some of the FFR vendors here in the forum list. They are a great source. Feel free to ask me any questions that arise and I will do my best to help. Best of luck and enjoy your build.

Thanks so much. It is always best to hear right from someone with actual experience. I was under the impression that only a front sump would clear the frame or mounts. The Roush at the Mott build school had a giant 8qt Canton front sump unit on the 331 that they build. Glad to hear that I would not have to mess with the bottom side and discard parts. Your advice about displacement is exactly what the gentleman from Roush said also. That a milder built higher displacement would be more driver friendly that a higher tuned smaller motor. I like the look of the Al heads but I need to stay in my budget and the much higher HP and torque add a whole new level. I'll probably go with the 331 and use the $100 I save towards a hydraulic clutch setup. What is nice for me is that I am a 20 minute drive from Summit in Tallmadge, OH. I was just there on Saturday to pick up some Lizard Skin for the outside of my footboxes. One of my concerns is that in Ohio the registration process is at least as much about taxing what you spent on your build as it is about anything else. I need to find out if I get the drivetrain through Summit and pay sales tax at time of sale, do I get a credit back when I register the finished car. I had been looking at March Performance but I will check out Vintage Air as well.
Your body work and paint turned out really nice. I hope the shop we have here in town does as nice a job for me this fall. My plan is to have the car to them by Thanksgiving and let them take their time over the winter with it. They like to work in projects like these in between the bread and butter insurance collision work.
Thanks for the advice and enjoy your finished toy. Do you have plans for the next project yet?

I am about 97% done now. I was able to drive it around our private subdivision some. I really love the Breeze quiet side pipes. They have a good sound but at cruising you can easy talk and here the radio. My Type 65 was so much louder than this. The insulation I used really keeps the heat out of the cockpit except when stopped for long times with the engine running. As soon as I cut the A/C on even with the top off it is comfortable even sitting still. I have not noticed any exhaust smell at all except in a enclosed garage, etc. Overall I am totally pleased with the build and hope to have it tagged and titled by the 30th. Here are some pics.

Did some work on a few small problems. I installed heat isolators on the carbs for better hot starting. Also installed a idle solenoid for good idle with A/C on and good shut off characteristics. I also got rid of the progressive linkage on the carbs. On advice from a good friend familiar with dual quads they now open together. Throttle response and drivability much better. He swears the gas mileage is better this way also. Time will tell. I also installed convex mirrors from NAPA. I can see much better around car now. I really like that I did not bring the stripes across the dash. No glare in the windshield. I will drive it to Ocala on Monday for tag and title. About 45 miles one way. Should be a good shake down run.

Took the wife and I out to breakfast this morning in Gainesville, about 18 miles away from home. At the last minute we decided to put on the soft top. Glad we did. About 5 miles from getting home it poured rain. We did not stop to put in the side windows. We kept fairly dry but did have some drips. Overall very pleased with the car so far. Once the fuel issues are solved it will be great IMO.
Having now built every FFR kit except the GTM, I would say this is the easiest by far to build. I also am surprised that it handles the best of all of them I had so far as well. It is so much fun without the top to drive. Glad I spent the extra money on the quiet pipes as well. I would like to thank FFR, Huegenics, Breeze Automotive, North racecars, Summit, Replicaparts, Herb Fraser, Russ Thompson, Mike Forte, Finish line, My Hot rod friends and Marsha my lovely wife. Time for the 500 mile service. I changed oil and filter. Torqued all bolts and checked fluids. All has gone well except the fuel system. Dual quads sure are cool to look at but a PITA to live with. I decided to go with FITech FI system. Today I installed the fuel tank submersible pump, fuel filter, pressure and return fuel lines. Of course I first removed my carb fuel line and external electric fuel pump and filter. Then I removed the carbs and intake. I installed the new intake, V/C's and PCV valve. Tomorrow I hope to have 95% done and send off the side pipe to have the O2 sensor bung TIG welded in place. Hope to have it running by Friday if all goes well. If anyone is interested I will make a deal on my SBF intake and carbs.

Finished up the swap to FITech FI. Wow! what a difference. Car starts with just a turn of the key hot or cold. Shuts off without dieseling. Idle stays right at 925 A/C on or off. Do not be fooled by the screen shot. That is 1000 rpm not 9000. Not sure why it came out that way, LOL. I may never put another carb on a build again. Super easy install and programming. Learns the engine very quickly. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Hey Tom, any thoughts on how the power output might change with the FI addition? Up Down, the same? You had posted some time ago that the 347 had dyno results of 430.6 ft./lbs. of torque at 3800 RPM. 411.7 HP at 5700 RPM with a 600 CFM carb. I'm just curious of your opinion, though the key is how great it runs hot or cold. Nice work as usual!

Tom:
Your idle should not be that high once the engine "settles down". It should be at about 650 with a manual transmission, and about 750 with an automatic, when set up for street use. The computer should only take about 30 to 60 seconds from a cold start to bring down the idle to normal. If you're not achieving this, your EFI system needs further tweaking. This could be done by simply setting the idle screw, or making the proper entries on the handheld unit.

Well I had a bit of bad luck last few weeks. On 11/4/16 i was coming home from a friends home about 6 miles from my home. I was driving just normal when at first I thought I heard a exhaust leak. As I got closer to home it got much louder and more metallic in sound. Really sounded like a rod knock. I had good 50 psi of oil pressure and temp was 180. I was able to limp it home and shorting out 1 cylinder at a time I found it was coming from #1 the loudest. I pulled the V/C to check valve train. All was good. Drained oils and cut open oil filter no metal at all, nice and clean. I contacted Blue Print Warranty department. They had me do a few diagnosis type things and then told me to ship the engine back to them on their dime. They said they would fix it right for me. Even though it was a pain to remove the engine. It was running so great! The folks at Blue Print were very nice and willing to help. I just put it on the freight truck and hope to hear something next week or so. I really do not know what went wrong, very strange IMO. To top it off I fell and really hurt my tail bone. I am OK but really sore, OUCH!:(

Tom,
The engine gremlins seem to be following you around with this build. Now I'm a little nervous myself. I got the Blueprint 306 with Al heads last July and it is all dressed up and sitting in my garage waiting to be installed into my kit. My build progress slowed down due to a problem with one of my hips that progressively got worse until I had artificial hip replacement surgery last month. I'm doing great and can't wait to get back to the car project but it is very hard to be patient and just let things heal. Sorry to hear about your injury too.
I hope Blueprint comes through for you and will keep checking back to see what went wrong. Hopefully it is some thing that was just a fluke problem.

I'm looking at Blueprint for my power plant and after reviewing their package options, I'm wondering what the advantage is to ordering the Tremec with the engine from them. It seems like the price is a bit high, but does that include a bunch of other parts that are needed if you were to buy the trans elsewhere?
Hi Papa,
Besides the engine and tranny coming completely assembled and ready to install, the following parts are included if you buy the engine/transmission from BluePrint...
Mcleod Super Street Pro single disk clutch
Aluminum Bell Housing
Tremec HD Yoke
Flywheel “pro-comp”
VSS Harness
Reverse light harness
Pilot bushing
Clutch kit bolts
Bell housing to block bolt kit
Engine guard
Tuff Stuff starter
Flywheel bolts
(Engine guard or pivot ball not included )
Here's a link to the 306 Carbed version if you would like to look it over yourself...

Christmas came early the engine showed up yesterday at 3PM. I was able to get it ready to go in last night about 7PM. Got it running today at 3PM. Engine runs great and no problems.

That's what I was looking for. Blueprint is only a few hours away in Kearny, NE., and my daughter is moving to Omaha next year. I could pick up a complete setup on my way home! I was considering the 347 FI with PS and TKO-600.
Thanks for the information,
Dave

Tom-
That's great news! Glad you are able to drop in the engine in time to take the son-in-law for a spin.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Regards,
Steve

Thanks. BluePrint was very good about fixing the engine. I actually made 5 more HP on the dyno this time. It is nice to know they stand behind their work.

Tom,
You amaze me with how fast you get the job done. Have you driven the car with the engine? How did it run? Did they give any explanation for the trouble? Last I heard the had told you they could not find a problem.
It will be a few more months before I am ready for first startup on my 306.

The engine runs perfect. No explanation was given but I am pretty sure they replaced at least my crankshaft. It came back without the pilot bearing in it. Not sure why they would have removed that if they did not replace my crankshaft. Personally I am just happy that it is fixed and runs perfect. It even dynoed 5hp more this go round. 416HP. I am overall very pleased and would buy another BluePrint engine in the future.

Here is an update on my MK4. I now have 1600 miles on it and today I did a oil and filter change. All is well with my Blueprint 347. I am very happy with it, no problems at all. Saturday I went to a car show in Bellview Fl. It was put on by the Antique Automobile Club. Mostly went to have some fun meet folks and have a great ride on a beautiful day. I was fortunate to win another trophy with this car. I also met a couple guys from Canada of all places and one young man who had on a FFR T-Shirt. He is dreaming of building a MK4 or GTM. I told him to wet his feet with a MK4 first, LOL. Here is a pic of the car and one of the coolest air cleaners I ever saw on a street rod.

Here is the MK4 loaded up to head to its new owner in Snellville, GA. I am heading out early Tuesday to deliver. Making a stop at Prestige Mustang on the way home for a 8.8 for my 35 pick up. Also stop by Summit and loose some cash, LOL.

I really like how you closed in the wheel wells. Is that all custom or did you buy panels somewhere? Would you be willing to share the patterns for them if you made them? This is my first build. Complete kit is ordered and should be ready before the end of the year. I’m trying to collect the extras beforehand to speed the process.

I think you are referring to post #77. Most of the other panels come with the kit. I just mocked the small ones up with cardboard the transferred to aluminum. You can do it easily. I did not make a pattern that I kept. Each car is slightly different so custom part for each is needed,
