Looks like everything went ok. I'm not sure if the inspector told me or not about getting the Inspector report back (LT 270) that will have to go with the MVR 55 Title Application. Can any of you NC builders fill in any of the details? I assume they mail me a LT 270 form. Anything I need to know to make the rest of the process go smooth?

Great news, they generally leave you a copy of LT 270, you fill out MVR 55, and take that, proof of insurance and bill of sale to the tag office and you can drive it to VIR next weekend! Congratulations.

Just my luck the inspector that got my car to do had never done one before and didn't know a Cobra from a Pinto. He pulled up a Cobra on Google to make sure it looked like one. Good thing I had a copy of the new SEMA law, he didn't know how to list it. By the time he was done he started coming around. At the end he ask.. so you actually built this thing?

I am approaching this soon. What part of NC are you in? does the car have to be painted before inspection? Are they just checking for stolen parts or is there a safety inspection also?

I'm in Greensboro. Mine was in Gel coat. They just want it to look driveable and yes their only concern is finding stolen parts. Safety inspection is later after they get your money ..
Get a copy of the SEMA bill passed in the fall of 2009. The inspector that did mine didn't have a clue what to call it or what the law was. I'm sure he could have found out but I may have saved myself some issues by having it on hand.

I've got to give a plug to Jeff at Whitby's on this topic. I was really kinda concerned after hearing all of the horror stories over the last couple of years.

Jeff really made it easy for me by coordinating the inspection with the DMV folks. He painted my car, did the final trim install, then got the DMV out to inspect. All I had to do was take the documents to the Greensboro tag office and get my plates (after they took my $ of course).

No issues. No hassles. Thanks Jeff!

For those that are interested I called the DMV inspector today to see if everything was still ok and when I could expect the LT 270 form (Inspection report). He said it was mailed to Raleigh for the Official NC sticker maker to do up my serial number. He said he would then come back out to put the sticker on. Seems every inspector I have talked to and every owner that has been through the process has a different situation and version of how it all goes down. So far it hasn't been a problem just time consuming like the entire build process.

You're welcome Tad, looking forward to seeing you at VIR this weekend. It sounds like they are issuing a VIN number David instead of using the FFR serial number. Keep us posted as to what the final outcome is. We have two scheduled for this week
we'll see how they handle those

Will do!
Keep in mind I got a "Replica Virgin" Inspector on mine, he had never seen one before. He may be doing things by the book as he was told by someone futher up the food chain. I ask if he could use the FFR number when he was doing the inspection and was told no. I even brought up the fact the FFR number was on my plate from FFR and the frame already. He said Raleigh would tie all the numbers, Engine, Trans and Frame to the new serial and would go into a national database for theft tracking. You may get another Inspector that does things differently which is exactly the point I was making about how the process seems to vary.

Update... Took from 05/20 to 06/13 to get the paper work done. I have tags and the state has the paper work to do the title. The lady at the license office warned me it might take the state months to do the title but she added but you have tags so have fun...

Great news, now drive that baby!
We've had two done in the last month with no snags. The DMV has got a good process in place for us now.

Let's hope it's good enough for at least one more!

I must admit I was thinking the whole time the lady did the paperwork at the license office some snag would pop up. I was relieved and suprised when she told me what to make the check out for. So we are good? Yep. Whoo hoo.
