View Full Version : Can the output from the temp sender be used/converted to trigger the fan relay?

Just thinking out loud....

I don't want to add another sender if I don't have to and I don't have another NPT in my intake to add one.
I've used the cheaper thermo switchess that read air temp but have read they don't work as well and I don't want to risk the motor.

So, Anyone ever figured out how to use the FFR Smith's temp sending unit to trigger a fan switch?

Thx, Matt

The guage sender is a variable resistor. For the fan you need an on/off switch. Theoretically the resistor could be made to work but would require some logic to do so. If you don't have another usable port in the manifold the easy solution is to pick up a thermostat housing with a threaded port (about 10 bucks at Autozone) or tap yours.

FWIW, I've used one of the radiator air temp probes for fan control for 3 years/10K miles with no issues.

Cheers,
Jeff

Always follow the advice of his Kleinerlinness The Grand Poobah of Replicas for his advice is golden. Read his scripture on Fan relays in the book of Indy 14 on the other site. Ahhhman!
