Why does everybody do this? I'm in the process of building my MKIV right now with a 302 and I cant see any clearance issues with the oil filter. It looks like it will go on and off no problem. I guess it's near the headers but it doesn't look close enough that there would be a heat issue. Any insight here folks?

It is not necessary to relocate the oil filter unless you are using shorty headers and J pipes and there is a clearance issue. Some also use it to run an oil cooler. I didn't use it on my build.

Don't use it unless necessary to get the filter on and off. It just presents unnecessary complication and potential for leaks and pressure loss. As already mentioned, some engines and some header combinations need it. FF supplies it with all kits. I have a couple spares...

If you have to (as mentioned - shorties w/J-pipes), Ford Racing sells a ninety degree adapter to swing it away from the headers. Nice piece and works great. The FFR piece is not high quality and prone to leaks...

Dear R8er,

I have recently dropped in a 302 for my MK4. I had the same confusion and my engine builder stated not to use the oil relocater kit as it is not needed and can caused lots of problems down the road. I have lots of space for a standard oil filter while using regular headers.

Thanks
