View Full Version : IAC - Idle Air Control Valve Problem

I wanted to pass on a lesson learned the hard way. I have spent the last few months as I have time trying to solve a rough idle, and random occurring IAC error code. Basically the engine would run fine until it warmed up and then it would just die as if it was flooding itself out. So here is what I learned. I tested the voltage on and off going to the IAC. It would show 12 v on and 0 v off, as it should. But as the car heated up, it would begin to try and idle down which then caused the air problem. I removed the plug tested and the car still die, which was what I expected. Then I removed the IAC and connected my battery charger directly to the IAC. To my surprise, it began to vibrate. This is when I was really able to test it. I plugged it back into the car and did not attach it to the engine. I turned the car to on and nothing happened. However, if i moved it around, it would vibrate a little every so often. I cut the connector and went directly into the IAC and it began constantly vibrating. Put it back on the engine and the car worked just as it should. When the engine was hot, I was able to put a load on it by turing the wheels and the car stayed running. The IAC error code was now gone as well. One final test, removed the IAC connection while hot, and it died instantly. The ultimate problem was that the original connector was not making contact. It is probably pushed back or up. My volt meter has a larger probe than the actual connection, so that may have damaged it further. This was very frustrating and I obviously I never thought it would be in the connection itself. Hopefully this will help someone.
