View Full Version : 3-link retrofit help on MK3

I'm doing a retro-fit on my MK3. My frame only has the 4-link bracket welded to it (not like the newer frames where both suspension setup brackets are there).

This is the upper link frame bracket I got from FFR this week and it has me confused.

In the retro-fit kit instructions I have, the bracket doesn't have the 'wing' on the bottom. But it shows the bracket going in like this (with the vertical face toward the rear axle)

But this is the area where it goes

The wing would just be hanging out in space.

Even if I turned it around so the wing was facing the outside of the car, the frame bracket isn't angled the right way for the wing to bolt to it.

What's the wing for? I thought it was to strengthen the bracket...but there's nothing for it to bolt to.

It almost looks like the wing should bolt to the frame member that the current 4 link bracket is attached too (after I cut out the current 4-link bracket)....but that would mean that the upper-link bracket I just received is welded together wrong....the angles aren't right.

Here it is turned around:

I would first check with the manual? I thought the MK3's could use either the 4 or three link. If you can not use the existing bracket, then you are correct. You need to cut out the old 4 link bracket and bolt in the new three link bracket. 2 bolts on the top and 2 bolts on the side. Be careful while cutting. I suggest taking out the gas tank and covering all key areas with a welding blanket. A lot of sparks are flying when cutting and you don't want to catch anything on fire.
I did the conversion on my MK1.5 this past winter and it was well worth it. Just take your time especially when cutting. I would also strongly suggest looking into the VPM supports for the banana bracket and frame. They are a great addition to the structure especially if you are not welding the banana bracket to the axle. PM me if you need any photos
