I just have to post this because what is happening to our hobby. I went to my local speed shop, yes this is a store that sells performance parts, and asked for a shifter for my hotrod. I said to the guy behind the counter that I am looking for a 700r4 shifter. He said to me "is that a brand name because I can't find that manufacturer in my computer". I said to him that 700r4 is a gm transmission. He said I haven't herd of that transmission.

Just be glad he was honest enough to admit this.... he can learn! Those that won't admit they don't know everything are more of a challenge to deal with, aren't they?

He's just like what you find behind the counter at most of the big box parts stores in recent years. All they know is how to punch prompted information into their computer which will then tell them what part to pull off the shelf. They don't necessarily know (or care) what the part is, they're just selling "stuff". They could just as easily be selling refrigerators down the street at Best Buy...and if it paid an extra 50 cents an hour that's exactly what they'd be doing.

Try living in the UK. If you don't have a licence plate, NOBODY can help you find a part.

"Computer says no".

You have to be an expert and know exactly what you are looking for.

It's the same thing for pretty much any shop. If it doesn't say it on the price tag/label, then the customer service person doesn't know anything more than what you can read on the label.

The problem is they don't hire people that are passionate about our hobby hey just want a warm body in a chair.
