Has anyone fit a larger tire on the rear of an MKIV than a 315?

Short answer, yes. But is your question with or without modification? Not so easy without modifications. Also, the question is why? 315's look like steam rollers back there.

One thing to think about, as the wheel gets bigger, the tire gets more "square." There is a limit to size relating to aspect ratio, taller ratios and smaller wheels allow fatter tires. I think the issue is that its the corner of the tire that hits the rear cockpit wall. I know I used a 295/45-17 tire on my Dart that had as much contact patch as my 315/60-15 tire, both were the same Mickey Thompson drag radials. I even tried a 305/30-19 on it once (on my Mustang, but looked silly on a 68 Dart) and it had a lot of tire contact to the ground.
Notice that this tall tire has rounded shoulders.

This low profile is very square shoulder. If both were 26", both 315's, the clearance to the cockpit wall would be better with the shorter wheel, however, less actual tire contact.
