Is 315/35-17 the absolute max for rear tire? Will a 335/35-17 fit?

Define "fit". If you mean can you stuff it under there then yes, you can---however if you want to stuff it under, run a conventional right height and not have it rub the chassis &/or body while actually driving the car you might want to reconsider.

Yes, obviously 'fit' means I want to drive it normally and not rub my paint. I'm guessing 315 is the answer then.

You get a 335 under the car but you need an 11" wheel and it is really still to narrow for the tire. The tire will be pulled a little on the wheel not letting it gain it's full width and potential. Stick with a 315, it's more tire than the car actually needs if it set up properly.

I have an 11" rear wheel on mine with a 315 and there is def room to spare so you could prob fit a 335 but I think the 315 looks better on the 11" wheel

You have fit, look & functionality to think about.

The 315's will give you a no compromise fit without any special mods.

They look IMHO good. The outer lip of the fender covers but does not rub on the 315 tires

There is plenty of rubber on the ground, the tiles are 12" square. These are NITTO 555R high traction radials that will snap your head back very easily off the line if you are not prepared. Any 315 radial with good grip will do an ecxellent job getting the power to the ground.

I am running 15" wheels on my MKIII.
12" of rubber in the back, and 8" up front.
Will post tire size when I get back home from work.
Just put new wheels on (same dimensions as ones being replaced), and have my other set for sale cheap if there is anyone interested.
They are race-legal wheel and in great condition.
Will post pics after work if there is any interest.

The 17" FFR Halibrands are stamped 9.0" in front and 10.5" in back.

I'm still not at go kart stage and I have 15" and Billboards. What I am trying to achieve is the same overall wheel dia as the 15" + 295's. With the 315 on 17's its an inch less. IMO the rear wheel doesn't fill the rear arch as good as the front and I don't want to make it look worse! Shame theres not a 315/40!!

I'm just setting up my IRS alignment and am running 315s on my 17x11 wheels. Any of you with a similar setup on a mk3 with IRS, what was you rear wheel width 59, 59.25 ot 59.5 inches? I want max width to prevent rubbing on the wheel well forward aluminum but don't want to rub on the lip of the body.

You might want to list brand & model. There is no standard of where the 315 - 335 measurements are taken on the tread. In the case of a close or doubtful fit the exact physical size of the tire is very important.

Your tires fit but another brand may not.

There is a standard. The 315 or 335 or 275 or whatever is the section width at the widest point. There can be a big variation in tread widths between tires of the same nominal section width among various manufacturers'.
