This past weekend, I had a chance to get 7074 out on the road - the Mother Road, that is. My wife and I took our cars out for a Fall cruise that included a small portion of Rt. 66 here in Illinois from Dwight to Pontiac. We had nine cars and ten people, which made for a nice size group that didn't overwhelm the stops.
We began by meeting in Dwight, where we headed to a restored Texaco station that serves as the town's visitor center. Lots of great automobilia there, as well as information on other towns along the road. Our next stop was at another restored gas station just down the road in Odell - this one is a Standard Oil station representing the 1930s. A little further down the road as we approached Pontiac, we stopped for lunch at the Log Cabin Inn, a restaurant that opened in 1926 - the same year that Rt. 66 was commissioned. Finally, we spent rest of the afternoon wandering through the various museums in Pontiac, including the Rt. 66 Hall of Fame and the Pontiac / Oakland collection (lots of cool old cars).
A few of us wrapped up the day be heading back north for a late afternoon (golden time) run through Starved Rock state park - a great time of day to see the Fall colors.
All in all, it ended up being another 180 mile road trip for me - so my grand total for my first driving season (so far) is 3,315 miles.
The cars included 7074 (347) , my wife's '67 Camaro (396) , a '74 Grand Am (400) , '79 Trans Am (Olds 403), '71 Torino (429 SCJ), '66 Mustang (289), '70 240Z (3.0), '70 Superbird (440), and a '15 Mustang (2.3 Ecoboost).
Here are a few pics of our adventure - the maps show just how far people come to drive Rt. 66 - it's truly a national treasure:
