Screen inside stock mustang tank ?

While cleaning out tank from 88 donor, I found an oblong screen at the bottom of the tank, there is a circle in it to attach somewhere but not sure, fuel pump still has a screen ? Any thoughts' ?

Its the screen that attaches to the in-tank fuel pump; probably came off at some point in time and was replaced by another.

Yep, that's what it is. The bottom of the fuel pump has a roughly 1 inch round fitting with a metal screen in it. The filter you found (often called a "sock") has a metal press-on ring that locks it to the bottom of the fuel pump. That thing holds on pretty tight. Surprised you found one loose in the tank. Maybe it came off when pulling the pump out of the tank? Either by you or sometime in the past.
