Have not heard of anyone doing that but lots of folks have just degreased them and masked off for powder coat

More like grind welds and unscrew. replace with better. I think some have powder coated with joints in succesfully.

I powder coated mine with no problems. I flushed out as much grease. I heated the arms to try and remove further grease. I then tapped the ball joints with high temperature tape. Worked out fine.

I removed both uppers on mine, some I ground out the welds others I used a holesaw that just fit over the ball joint. Then the uppers do just un-screw.
The holesaw did a bit neater job with less heat generated but since all of these are just tacked by hand each one has a bit different size/shape of weld on it.
The lowers were the pressed in variety with a tack weld and I chose to do the holesaw demo on the one I took apart for pattern making on the new lower arms I made
On the replace with better I went all out and used 4 of the bolt-in early Mustang joints so they were made to take the compression loads our uppers have. IF I choose
to powdercoat mine at some point I can just un-bolt all 4 joints and I'm good to go. If one fails away from home it's a simple fix to install a new ball joint, no welding.
