I requested, and paid for, a vanity plate in California. Actually California calls it an "environmental license plate". The plate I requested was FFR818S. DMV just sent a letter informing me that my plate will not be made because it "contains a reference to a gang affiliation (specific number, colors, area codes, etc)"
I did some looking and it seems like the 818 has been used to describe an area code, and that area code does have gangs. What area code does not have gangs in California???! Urban dictionary says that the 818 area code is the porn capital of the world. How about that?
So now I have to write a "letter of explanation for further review" if I want to still get it. In the mean time they will take between 60 and 90 days to get my refund to me.
