View Full Version : Tap it off??
Trying to take the front CV joint apart. Manual says to put the shaft in a vice and "TAP" the outer CV joint off.
What the H. I just used a 4 pounder and didn't get it to come off. ended up destroying the bearing retainer and it finally fell apart. Whats the secret to tapping it off?

Was it a piece original equipment? I found that the original Subaru CV's come apart pretty easily. Some of the aftermarket ones are really hard to take apart. The problem I had was the ones that were tough to disassemble were a slightly different design and had the wrong spline count.

Roy, can you post a pic of the cv joint? As Buzz mentioned, you probably have an aftermarket axle.

With my axle clamped in in a 6" bench vise with the outer CV hanging down.
I put a tapered end on a 12" long 2x2 wood . So the end was a 1x2.
I used that like a punch to drive off the INNER RACE.
A 3 lbs sledge with a couple of good wacks.

I've done a few.

I did the same as Bob. It seems to go easier if you focus the force on the inner portion.
Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking they are after market CV's. both the front nuts had been used before and were harder to get off. Guess I'll go out and beat the other one to smithereens!

agreed, use a beefy *** drift, (or a pin from a 20ton press) and aim right at the middle. one hard blow is all mine took.
Second one cam apart after about 5 blows. A lot easier. I now have some of those coveted "steelies" for my marble collection!

I suffered through serious axle woes. Don't bother with non OEM axles (NAPA is the only company I know of that re-manufactures OEM ones).
