With just 30 miles on 8442 T5 transmission the VSS in the tail shaft is leaking ATF through the mechanical cable receptacle. From what I read in other forums it's just a matter of time that the driven gear will walk up and down on VSS shaft without presence of a speedo cable installed to hold in position and start to leak. I have pushed a small rubber plug in behind the green o-ring for now. Some fill with RTV or JB Weld.

I see that the Napa replacement VSS306 has a plug already install. I read that the Thunderbird used a VSS that only had an electrical Dongle but can find a part number for it.

What have others done to fix?

i used the NAPA version.....actually just removed the plug and installed it into the VSS i originally used.

This question comes up a lot. The VSS with the mechanical cable connection will eventually leak if a cable isn't plugged into it. Best to replace with the correct VSS plugged from the factory. A Standard Motor Products SC37 or equivalent is what you want. Available at many parts stores, Summit Racing, etc. Breeze Automotive (forum vendor) also sells them.

My T5 transmission also started leaking from the same place after less than 100 miles. On a positive note, it'll be far easier to replace the SC37 sensor as opposed to the other possibilities for a leaking transmission. :)

Update, I found a rubber plug in tool box about the same size as you would see as a dust cap for brake bleed fitting on the caliper. Fit snug in hole and leak gone. Will check every couple hundred miles
