Can anyone tell me if a 9" deep rear sump on a 302 engine will hang below the chassis?

Short answer, probably yes. I am using a Canton pan with 8" sump and it is almost flush with the rails. I have Energy Suspension motor mounts.

Agreed. That's too much. With the recommended 4.0 - 4.5 inch ride height, the oil pan would be only 2.5 - 3 inches from the ground. Not good! Some variation depending on what engine mounts you are using, but the generally recommended oil pan depth for a SBF is 7.5 inches. Multiple suppliers make them in this depth. Again depending on your setup, the pan will be close to the same height as the 4 inch chassis tubes.
