I have my pre-order in since last month and Subaru parts filling up my house and garage suspense is killing me hahaha. Has anyone heard anything new on production status or really anything new? I know some spots on the site say august 1st production :D and my confirmation email when I ordered said end of august(maybe that's just me and not everyone else).

I was wondering the same and also about the front end.

Maybe the updates, if they exist, will address these, but I have a few questions about the coupe top.

How do you get access to the motor and transmission area? It looks like I'd have to remove the hard top to do it. Is that right, or will the rear window open?

Will there be something separating the engine compartment from the passenger compartment? The firewall is still there, of course, but the area above shoulder height is open all the way back in the prototype.

Will the hard top fit over the roadster engine cover? That would solve the problem I mentioned above, but I can't quite see how that would be possible with the top as it's currently designed.

Thanks,

Buzz

Buzz, I'm pretty sure the rear window of the coupe top is hinged at the front edge to open. There will be a window between the seats and the engine, thus isolating the engine from the people and allowing rear visibility. The two current engine covers will not be used. I'm also anxiously awaiting word on my pre-order for the hard top.

Yeah have read that there will be a window/ separation between interior and the engine bay. They just didn't finish it come release time.

It looks like the rear window opens here in this link http://www.factoryfive.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/DSC_6664-694x413.jpg looks like a button or clip of some sort to open the engine bay. I'm still wondering how hard it will be to actually do any work on the car though. The S and R guys make it sound decent easy with their cars so maybe not to hard here. Glad I am not the only one wondering about updates.

I just want to keep making progress on body work. The top is holding me back no point in doing work again and again which seems the case with this car. It's August 5th time for any update and take the rest of my money.

Sooner rather than later I hope. I wonder how quickly us that ordered just the hardtop will get word of shipment. I am putting the body together right now on my kit. I am hoping I reach the painting phase at the same time as I get the hardtop so I can paint both.

Don't worry. FFR keeps its word and there's a lot to do with the interior window and electric windows for the doors. I'm waiting on mounting my door cards so I'm working on interior upholstery and the console to keep entertained.

I can't stand waiting any more. I pre-ordered the hard top, but went ahead and bought a soft top today so I can wrap up my build and have some fun this summer without worrying too much about being caught in the rain (it rains a lot here in Maryland). I'll probably go ahead and buy the coupe top anyway, and spend the winter months installing it. (It's a good thing my wife doesn't read this forum, or check the prices in the FFR store.)

I think we are all eagerly awaiting news on release. I pre-ordered very early and as far as I last knew, production was expected loser to be end of august. I have parts building up over the garage now too... The only thing keeping me from going nuts waiting in anticipation is the birth of my daughter this weekend.

The new Factory Five 818 Coupe enters production in a few weeks. Check out the photo gallery.

Factory Five 818 Update - Summer 2015
The Factory Five 818 development plan is coming along nicely, and I'm super excited to let you guys know that in addition to the new coupe, we are working on several drivetrain options, namely the 200 hp Subaru BRZ normally aspirated boxer motor and Ford's 2.3L 310 hp EcoBoost 4 from the 2015 Mustang. So the original concept of the 818 as a multi-purpose platform is almost complete with three distinct models: the 818S street car, the 818R race car, and the 818C coupe. Now with engine choices, it will be even more flexible.

The last 818 update that I sent out was in April just prior to our debut of the newest 818 Coupe at Open House in June (click here to read that update). At our summer Open House event, we were able to show off the coupe, and promised production would begin shortly thereafter.

We have taken deposits (pre-orders) in chronological order for both the 818 Coupe and the optional removable hard top. We have logged about 50 orders for the car, and also another 60 orders for the hard top option for existing 818S models. Perhaps the biggest news is that I made the difficult decision to update ALL 818 models with the newly revised nose. The original 818S nose will still be available, but the new design from the coupe will be standard on all three models.

We will have all three models on display at SEMA (with updated front ends and engine choices) and production is scheduled to begin in a few weeks (September 2015).

2015 Coupe and Production Hard Top Scheduling Update

The revised 818C hard top with liner has been fit and released to production. Side glass windows have been released.
818 Coupe orders have been taken in chronological order, and it looks like we will begin production just after Labor Day. Hard top orders will follow soon afterwards, but all shipments are going to be determined by receipt of parts from outside vendors. The tech team here at Factory Five will be sending out production dates to everyone who has placed a deposit. Our production plan is to manufacture 818 Coupes at a rate of three per week.

Left: Underside of hard top shows ducted roof scoop. Right: Air duct to intercooler line with template for bulkhead glass.
Hard Top Changes: Following the Open House debut, we've made some changes to the hard top. We simply wanted a tighter fit, and the gap at the trailing edge of the window was too large. We needed to finish the design of the inner liner, bulkhead, and ducting. The new mold is complete, released, and in production. The new liner is AWESOME, and the two fresh air ducts channel air to the engine bay just past the bulkhead.

Glass: We have test fit and released the new glass side windows and are waiting on the first articles of the rear hatch glass, inner bulkhead glass, and side quarter window glass. The samples are due in this week, and the final parts are the longest lead time item in the coupe project.

https://staticapp.icpsc.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/1035541/f1d5dd73d53cc62dda6d57366520e7d0/image/jpeg
Nose/fenders/grille: The fender molds were released to production and we are building stock at this time. The nose is also in production. The insert (grille section) is being revised, and is due to be completed in two weeks for production release. Headlamp units are finalized, and we are awaiting stock. We are also working on the manual for hard top replacement on an 818S model.

Pricing: Final pricing has been established for the 818 Coupe as well as the upgrade parts. The 818 Coupe model is $12,990.

The hard top upgrade is $2,999, and includes the hard top with functional liner, cockpit bulkhead with glass, rear quarter glass, hinged rear hatch with glass, and power side windows with exterior door handles.

Front nose upgrade is $799, and includes two fenders, head lamp buckets and lenses, projector head lamps, eight (8) LED indicators, bolt-in grille insert with mesh, and steel mount brackets for retro fit to 818S nose.

We'll let everybody know when parts are released and available for sale with a similar e-mail blast and web post.

818 Coupe Heads to the Wind Tunnel

The production 818C is headed to the wind tunnel for two days of testing just after Labor Day. The car will get downforce optimization of the rear diffuser and front splitter as well as testing of new canards, and final drag numbers using production nose, grille, and roof with functional vents.

PowerNation's "Engine Power" Show to Build an EcoBoost 818!

https://staticapp.icpsc.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/1035541/300767243de248504fbc80ecf3c1b5a2/image/jpeg

In addition to providing design options for the 818, we've been looking at continuing to offer powertrain options. A lot of people have been asking for American engines to be used in the 818. We've worked with the guys from Ford, and will be filming a show with PowerNation's "Engine Power" in October to install the new 2.3L EcoBoost 4 from the 2015 Mustang. We are also adding the Subaru BRZ engine which is a 200 hp normally aspirated boxer engine. Both of these new powerplants promise big fun and will debut at SEMA 2015.

It's a bit ambiguous. Because he states that, "Perhaps the biggest news is that I made the difficult decision to update ALL 818 models with the newly revised nose. The original 818S nose will still be available, but the new design from the coupe will be standard on all three models." Which would make the new front end the standard...

How can it be an upgrade if the new nose is now the standard nose? The only upgrade it can be is to those who retrofit.
Plus, it specifically says "...and steel mount brackets for *retro fit* to 818S nose."

New BRZ motor means new WRX engine will work... I love that motor so much better than the old EJ... Definitely getting the new nose now at that price. I wonder what they are going to do though for the engine management with swapping to newer engines and trying to get them street legal in some states.

redfogo
08-26-2015, 08:49 AM
I was wondering the same thing how they plan to do wiring with any of the new swaps. Even with increase of the price of the engine such as the FA or the Ecoboost those wiring harnesses are most likely going to be hard to find used so most would have to go new and that's not all to cheap. I would love to have a FR-S gauge cluster though. I already ordered and received my Ej207 though, so I better just erase any other engine swap thoughts.

08-26-2015, 10:26 AM
now the question is does the coupe with the air hose lines for the scoop do away with the need for the vcp awic. I bet ford racing will sell the new ecoboost motor with a stand alone engine management system like the old version available but if you have to meet emissions in your state that will be an issue. I want to stay suby 2.5 turbo built up for about 300/325 wheel hp

Have just joined this Forum.
When I was at FF5 in July I was told that I was number 11 on the pre-order list for 818C.
Have almost finished taking my donor apart and will start to clean the parts soon.
Since I am new to forums and new to this project I know I need help with the build. I am in Ontario Canada so I have additional work to do to get the starter kit to Canada. Al in BC has been
most helpful but its still a long way to go. Any help or suggestions would be nice to have. Anyone in the area around Lindsay (100KM north of Toronto) that would like to make contact with me
on this project would be welcome. Just respond and Ičll send you my E-Mail address.

Just received word back via email. The $799 price for new nose was meant for current 818 builders retrofitting the new nose. White is a special order but available. I was warned to expect body work as there is now a seam in the new fenders. They're including a can of white gel coat with the nose for this purpose.

I like the new parts but will be waiting to see what they actually look like upon arrival of others. I'm planning on keeping the white gel coat for awhile and the warning is making me reconsider.

I'm fascinated by how close this is leaning toward the Rossion Q1 (itself a derivative of the Noble M400).
Those cars use the Ford Duratec 3.0L V6 engine with a pair of turbochargers to produce 450 bhp, 390 lbs-ft in a car that weighs under 2500lbs.

Why is there so much confusion about cost for existing 818 owners? The description Dave gives with the $799 clearly identifies this as the cost for current owners who are retrofitting.

So order new front end.
Months later get front end,
fiberglass fenders together (if they are two piece),
Gel-coat seam, sand, polish,
Remove old parts, install new fenders and center section,
Rewire headlights, & turn signals,
Aim lights,
Hopefully, no changes to CF front splitter,
Done?

Can we do a group West Coast order to save on shipping? Maybe have a few of them at the next Huntington Beach Cruise-In?! That would make me go, and buy a front end and more!

There has to be a seem somewhere on the new fenders because they wrap all the way down to the splitter. The old fender ended much higher. There would be no way to get the mold off the new fenders if the mold was one piece. To be clear, it sounds like a ridge, much like on all the other ffr's, not something you would need to glass together.

redfogo
08-28-2015, 09:10 AM
I was thinking more of a ridge as well. I like this idea better any ways! I wonder if they plan to include touch up paint for the full 818c orders. I also thought it would be all red maybe it will be an all black mold, or maybe there test black top they have is just a one off.

Oops, it appears that the top and fenders have seams. It was posted a while ago that the hard top had seams, in the recent post by Dave that was a response to questions about cost of the fenders that he mentioned that gelcoat will be shipped with the new fenders. The nose piece apparently has multiple pieces to be assembled.

"A few questions have been forwarded. I spoke to Nate, and the molding department can definitely make the new fenders in white. The cost of just the fenders should be finalized in the next week or so as the boys lay up panels all week to benchmark costs. If we make white panels by special request, we will include the white gel coat repair because these fenders and the new hard top both have seams which require light bodywork."

Frank818

"Assemble". Multiple fiberglass pieces that you assemble together in order to make a complete a fender?

flynntuna

Sponaugle,
The new nose and coupe roof are not exclusive.
You can get one or the other or both for the 818S
The coupe roof does not fit on the 818R because of the high roll bar and tight access through the window.
The 818R will take the new nose.

I may have missed this, but is it possible to purchase the 818C body for an 818S kit already built (but without the body attached yet)? Would that be just the roof and the front/side clip?

Yes it is available. I don't believe they are releasing the front and coupe option as of yet tho for those that already have the S model. They are working on fulfilling the coupe orders. They should be soon tho. There was a preorder with deposit offered a while back by FFR.

Sponaugle,
The new nose and coupe roof are not exclusive.
You can get one or the other or both for the 818S
The coupe roof does not fit on the 818R because of the high roll bar and tight access through the window.
The 818R will take the new nose.

Ah ok.. that makes sense. So to convert to the 818C from the S you would need to get the new nose and roof. That makes sense.

Since I have not yes installed my body, it sounds like I could go ahead and install the rear sides and the back, just not the top and front. I wonder if you had the 818S fully installed would it be possible to remove the old stuff and put on the new stuff? I assume there would be nothing unreversible.

Thanks Kurk818! I have been neglecting my 818 while I work on restoring my R32 GTR, and I have some time to get the body done now. Hopefully FFR will catch up on production soon and start selling the coupe and front end upgrades!

Did you ever do any fender flare work on your car?

All the parts ar supposed to be interchangeable. Also the coupe has new door frames to accommodate the power windows.

Got my 818C last week. I was pre-order #7. Still doing inventory and planning, but am lucky enough to live 10 miles from Mechie3!!

Initial impressions are pretty good, but the back-order parts page is somewhat longer than I would have expected. Looks like the fun is ready to begin!

Good to know about that back-order list. I've pushed my start date back about 6 months so I hope that is all sorted out by then. Maybe Ford Performance will have a 2.3L engine out by then :-)

Craig and BL,
Michael and I am going to autocross tomorrow at Walesboro, IN.
If you make it down, I sure we can get Jay to put my 818 in 2 classes running opposite heats so we can run 4 drivers.

Got to see this on Sunday. Initial impressions are pretty good. I like the lines better in person than in photos. Still undecided on the front grill, but I'll hold judgement until it's actually put together.

Thanks, Craig, for the roof shot. It looks cooler than I thought with ridges all the way back. Now I'm even MORE excited about getting my coupe upgrade! I saw Dave's offer of shipping now without glass but I'll wait for the glass . . . and white.

Mechie3 the kit you show has a red top where as the other kit had a black top. Hmm I wonder what the standard is!
