Hello... This is my first post on here. I've been looking at the Mk4 kits for quite a while now and finally decided to go for it (super Exited!!) This past weekend I picked up a 1990 Mustang GT for a donor at the Syracuse Nationals. I'm still not sure if I'm gonna get the base or complete kit, but before that decision is made I may have already ran into my first problem. Everything looked good with the title on the donor, no leans etc, but I wanted to transfer the title into my name. When I went to the DMV they informed me the car had been totaled and I could not title it. So, my first question is for anyone who has gone through the title process in New York. I have the Donor title and a bill of sale, both are signed by the former owner. Will this be an issue when I get my DMV inspection when the car is done? Does the title for the donor have to be in my name or is the signed title and bill of sale good enough? Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the forum. What a great first question, since I live in CA I do not know the answer for NY but it would work out here.

In my part of NY they just need the title or a copy of the title, does not matter if its in your name or not, as long as the previous owner signed the back of title. When I junked the donor they needed the title, so I copied front and back and dmv took it

The problem appears to be that a 907A title was never issued to the seller, but the car was totaled.

See the attached for more information:

Where you go from here is simple, as the title to the car is in your hands, make copies, take pictures and rubbings of the VIN on the motor and transmission when you pull them. Keep all of this together for when you go for you initial inspection for title on your FFR roadster.

Thanks for the replies. I think I should be OK based on the reading I've done. My plan is to get the car disassembled over the next few weeks and see what I have to work with and go from there. Hopefully the vin # on the block matches the car. Is there a vin on the trans too?

Keg,

Welcome to the forum and the fun of building your own "Cobra." I'm in the middle of rebuilding an FFR Mark II Roadster. Here's a link to a thread I started back when I went through the "Process" with my Mark III. http://www.ffcars.com/forums/50-insurance-registration-discussions/221630-nys-registration-process.html

IMHO, it's not that difficult but you have to follow their rules to a "T". I would recommend a call/email to Mark Engel @ mark.engel@dmv.ny.gov or 518-474-5282, he is the go to guy at the Technical Services Bureau. Better have everything out in the open right from the start, instead of a nasty surprise later.

I am also sending you a PM, send me back your contact info and I'll include you on the Upstate Cobras email list. I keep track of over 60 owners/builders across the state.

Good luck,

Pat

Keg,

Welcome to the fun!
First off, I'm in Texas, so take this with a grain of salt. I used a donor pallet for my Mk 3.1 build. I did not receive the title for the wrecked 2001 Mustang GT that all the parts came from. The engine had a label on the drivers side valve cover and a bar code/number label on the bottom of the block (driver side, near the back). The transmission had a metal tag with stamped numbers on one of the case bolts. The rear axle had a metal tag with stamped numbers on one of the pumpkin cover bolts. When I registered my Cobra, I took with me photos and rubbings of the engine number, tranny number tag, and rear axle number tag. I also took my receipt for the donor pallet (which showed the car's VIN) to prove I owned the donor parts. At least for the 2001 mustang, the engine number, transmission number, and rear axle number are all unique numbers with different coding schemes. None of those numbers matched each other or the car's VIN.

Typically with a donor you would get the base kit. With a complete kit and a donor, you may be paying for a lot of leftover pieces. Either from the donor or from the kit.

Welcome to the forum BTW. You're in for a great time.
