Has anyone tried taking the OEM AC evap coils and welding them into an AWIC ice box? I was hoping I could run a switch that diverts from the vintage air evaporator coil coolant through a box while sitting at a stop or when you are off the gas, then the factory ECU will disengage the AC clutch under acceleration?

cool idea! ha ha ha.

The techno geek in me loves the idea.
But I don't think I would ever go through the effort. Sounds like a lot of work for minimal gain. How much extra power do you need? How much extra power will you get if the air is 40* below ambient?

That sounds like a great idea to me. Matteo has a point that it might be good to try to quantitatively determine what the benefits would be, but I bet it would help significantly for drag races and autocross, where you sit for a long time and drive for a short time.

Yeah, I am curious what the stock evaporator coil looks like. A 40Deg drop from ambient would be huge power difference. I doubt I could get that.

I may look at way I could keep ice box full of ice, without water circulation and figure out valving to only use it when I want.

I had to do some poking around to find out the Hp gain for decrease in air temp. I found a site that says about 1% Hp gain for every 10* (funny, they don't call out units, but the rest of their article uses standard units). So if you are making about 300 Hp, and drop 40* that is 3 x 4 = 12 Hp. Is this right?

Could be in some cases. Definitely Does not feel that way around here. Temperature easily swings 40 degrees in Denver and my legacy gt pushing about 400whp feels as fast with a couple people in my car on a cold day as it does with myself on a hot day. Maybe it could just be the heat soak...

400whp?! Wow!
I'm still learning about intake temps. I installed a awic with gauges. It stays ambient most of the time moving. At stops it will climb a little. I turn on the fans and it goes right back down.
I think a system that turns the fans on at less than 10mph would be worthwhile.

What a cracker idea! Surely this has been done before?
