One of our friends over on the 818 section of this forum has developed a set a really nice hinges for his 818 hood. See the thread here:

After reviewing the photos of these hinges, do they look like they could be used to support a tilt front on a Roadster? I have never seen the frame of the 818, so I am working only off of pictures on the internet. I looked at the photos that I can find of the front end of the Roadster frame. It looks to me like I could weld attachment points for the hinges to the frame just behind the front body attachment holes. Based upon the photos and your knowledge of the front frame of the Roadster, does it look like there is room to add these hinges without hitting the radiator or other items in the front end? I am also wondering if the tilt front mechanism from the Type 65 can be adapted to the roadster.

As always, thank you for your wisdom.

I was thinking the same thing ! I think it is sturdy enough and it looks great.

I don't think these hinges, although very well engineered and nice looking, will help much. The main problem with the Roadster tilt front is the exact location of the hinge axis so the nose doesn't contact the ground when opened and the fenders will not contact the tires as it swings up. I'm using the Roadster hood hinges for mine. They seem to be plenty strong but there are a lot of details that need to be worked through. The four bar linkage in the hood hinges have an added benefit raising the lift point as the front swings forward thus adding ground clearance for the nose.

Thanks King, I was hoping you would chime in on this. I know you have taken photos of your hinge system before, but would you mind adding a few more of the finished product. I read your previous post and am still trying to visualize what you are talking about, specifically the "four bar linkage". I understand conceptually what you are talking about with the correct axis point. You need to understand that geometry was the only course I ever got a "D" in. Of course it was mostly because the teacher was an incompetent dolt who was fired at the end of that year. And no I am not bitter about him ruining my gPA for that semester! It was 35 years ago for corns sake!! But I digress.
I also do not yet weld, though I am learning. Would you be willing to share your design so I could have a friend help me weld up a set? I was just hoping these 818 hinges would be a simple solution to this complex problem. Thank you for your added wisdom.
