Based on what I've read here (and there) over the last 13 years, I assume the seams still need attention so I started on what I thought I had to do. I used a flap wheel to knock down the seams until I was through the gelcoat. I kept at it until all the air holes were gone, which left a concave divot the length of the seam and about 2" wide. So far I've only done the front half, so stop me if I'm screwing up.

Sounds like you may be taking too much away. Knock off the flashing until it's flush. If at this point, you have a solid ribbon of clear glass, you may be done. You only need to dig deeper if there's gel coat down in the parting line. Maybe post some pictures? What vintage body? Some are definitely worse than others. But 13 year old posts don't necessarily represent bodies being sold today. (That's a good thing.)

They guys at whitbymotorcars were telling me you have to take a lot off, not to stop when the seams are gone. It may look good now but over time the seams will show back up. I was told when I get ready to start my body work to come up and they will give me some tips.
