My parents and I drove in from Michigan to the Factory Five open house. Ended up walking out having made the first order on a Type 65 with the new 2015 Mustang's IRS. I'll be sure to keep you guys posted on a build thread/site. I also might get a hold of a friend's brand new, all aluminum, 302 R. Sadly that's pretty unlikely.

You'll have the best of both worlds, good handling and compliant ride. Mine with 3 link rides pretty poorly but handles great. Congrats!!

Raise your right hand and say after me,

"I (State your name), do swear/affirm, that upon acceptance of this "Revered Coupe Jacket", will willingly subject myself to all manner of frustration and abrasion that my FFR Type 65 will provide. I further pledge that any and all fellow Coupe builders will have free reign in using the cash available in my wallet as they see fit to improve my build plan. I will not look down upon our fellow Roadster builders, but rather take pity on those not talented enough to build a race car with a roof, So Help Me God!"

It is my pleasure to present you with the "Revered Coupe Jacket", Here's your sign!!

David,

Welcome to the coupe crazies! You will undoubtedly need the straight jacket at some point in the build but we are all here to help you get through any difficulties. Congrats on the new IRS ... I saw the system several months ago at Factory Five and it is a huge improvement over the "old" IRS.

As an owner of a Type 65 coupe with IRS I am quite curious what the huge improvement over the "old" IRS is. Is it the use of newer parts, different suspension geometry, or maybe stiffness of the suspension links? Are the improvements large enough that I should sell my current car and build another?

Thanks,

Garry, is there a difference in handling or ride quality or is it just a lot cooler looking?

Thanks,

Roadster guy here, but I'll respond with what was said at the FF Open House some weeks ago. When Dave Smith unveiled the 20th Anniversary Roadster he talked quite a bit about the new 2015 Mustang IRS. He said in the past the 3-link was the "performance" suspension, and the IRS was the "comfort" suspension. With the new IRS design, it's now both. The best performance along with the best comfort. He cited some specific track results where the new IRS equipped Roadster was already beating the best times of previous 3-link runs. So, while I think it's pretty cool looking (what IRS setup isn't?) it does appear to be an upgrade plus the required parts are going to be much more available than the increasingly hard to find old IRS parts. Plus they figured out how to install the new IRS setup in the 33 Hot Rod, where it wasn't an option before. So another win. HTH

Thanks, that is pretty cool. I haven’t finished my first one yet but maybe it time to start thinking about a second one. Any idea why there is an improvement? The only things I can think of is stiffer suspension link and how they attach to the frame or possibly a change in suspension geometry. Any Ideas?

I honestly don't know any of the technical reasons the new IRS is an improvement. Maybe others do. FWIW, if you haven't already, look at the linked pictures and CAD renderings of the new suspension in the catalog: http://www.factoryfiveparts.com/all-new-2015-independent-rear-suspension/. Maybe you will have your own observations from those.

welcome to the madness! I am very interested in how the new IRS installs and works and handles. . . .

Bill,

There are upper and lower A- arms vs. the old system with just a single member on the upper control arm. The new system also has adjustable camber link and adjustable toe link ... no more washers and spacers. And yes, it does look cool! I saw the system installed on a '33 Hot Rod frame sitting in the FFR showroom several weeks ago.
