Being a Factory Five customer since 2009, I’ve watched the stories and pictures about the annual open house at Factory Five. Having a busy work schedule and being a bit far away in Michigan meant we haven’t been able to attend. But this year, with my recent retirement, we put it on our schedule, made hotel reservations, and planned to make the drive with the Roadster in the SE as usual for out of town events. We watched the weather forecasts right up until driving away from the house on Thursday morning. Saturday was still showing 50/50 for storms and rain, but we decided to go for it. It’s a couple hours quicker and 100 miles or so shorter going through Canada. The last time I went through Canada with the Roadster in tow, I had to answer a lot of questions. But not this time. Same on the U.S. side coming back in at Niagara Falls. Rain was still in the forecast Friday night, but basically gone by Saturday morning. All we got from the weather was a sunburn! We met up with a bunch of folks at Dave’s Diner and caravanned to Factory Five arriving just before the official start at 9:00 AM. The parking lot was filled mostly with Roadsters of every version and color, with a smaller number of Daytona’s, GTM’s, Hot Rods and 818’s around the perimeter. Maybe around 200 total? Don’t know and didn’t hear, but seemed an excellent turnout.

We watched the 818 Coupe unveiling. First time I’ve seen the 818 in person. It’s very cool, and I can see the attraction. Great job Factory Five. I climbed in and out of the new coupe. Not hard, but maybe not for everyone. With the racing seat and low and stretched out seating position, reminded me of my recent NASCAR driving experience. I’m not ready to get my head around a whole new engine and build setup, but I can see the attraction for these. The 8-10 completed 818’s that were there were very interesting to see.

We also watched the 20th anniversary Roadster unveiling, and listened to Dave’s words about it. I was interested in his comments. Some have said the Mk4 was the last and final version of the Roadster and FFR was moving on to other things. That’s not what Dave said. He described this car as the bread and butter of FFR and what built the company, and they would continue to look for ways to improve and make it better. The new 2015 Mustang IRS rear suspension is certainly evidence of that. I looked it over very carefully, including the Hot Rod chassis with it installed. Very impressive. I liked the anniversary Roadster a lot. With the Coyote motor, 18 inch wheels, new 2015 suspension, and modern black on dark grey metallic color scheme, it’s certainly come a long way from its 1960’s roots. The 18 inch wheels especially are definitely an acquired taste. When you see the car in total, personally I like them. But after watching a bunch of Roadsters come rumbling in and out of the show with their big fat billboard style tires, I can see why some react the way they do. I was contemplating a 289 FIA build, but now have my name on the list for one of the 20th anniversary models. Still thinking about the overall build plan, but it will be rocking those 18 inch wheels.

We did the Factory Five tour. As said before, first time we’ve been there so I found it very interesting. Dave is such a great ambassador for his company. I don’t get tired of his clear communication, enthusiasm, and obvious leadership. The factory is smaller than I expected. Having been in the manufacturing, operations, and IT world for my career, I was very impressed with how efficiently the space is used and multiple examples of lean manufacturing concepts. We scored some half price wind wings and visors for the next build at the garage sale. Cool!

Spent lots of time (and managed to miss out on the hot dogs) standing around my Roadster talking to fellow enthusiasts and meeting a few forum members. Probably my favorite thing to do. Near the end they give out awards for "Best of..." and found myself feeling a little disappointed when I wasn't called for any of the regular categories like best engine, best paint, best interior, best Roadster, etc. I’m just kind of competitive that way I guess. But then best of show, they called my name! Crazy with all the amazing cars there. Quite unexpected and a much appreciated honor! We left as they were busily tearing everything back down to get back to normal business next week. I don’t know how often we’ll make this trip, but it was a positive and amazing experience.

Today the weather looks nice, so we're going to do some cruising around Cape Cod, then head for home tomorrow. Great trip! A few camera phone pics from the show:

Congratulations Edward!! I can't say I am surprised. Even in photos, your work is impressive. I hope to some day see the finished product in person. If you keep getting these awards, you are going to need to get a bigger mantle to put them on.

I know you haven't had much time since you decided upon the new project, but a few hundred miles across country gives you time to think. Any hints at what you have in mind for the next one? How do you plan to out-do yourself?!!

Funny. Yea, there may have been some thinking about the new build while driving the 700+ miles back home. :D I've started making a list already. After two builds, there are some things I've decided I like and will do pretty much the same. But I also enjoy trying new things, so we'll see I guess.

Biggest decision will be the engine. Pretty sure I know what we'll do there, but not ready to say yet. Need to hit the "total" button on the budget. Also thinking very seriously about EFI this time around. We'll be making the drive back to FFR in August to pick it up, so lots of time to change my mind many times.

I am so happy for you! Was a pleasure to meet you and Sharon at breakfast at Dave's Diner. Saw you enjoying the festivities and am just thrilled that you won Best of Show! Roger and I were talking about which award your car would bring home so was pleased to read your post. Congratulations and we'll see you again, Karen

For your next project how about a Type 65, with new IRS, and a flat plane crank Ford engine. :)

...Biggest decision will be the engine...

You REALLY need to spend a little time talking with Ron Everitt at LCS next week. In the meantime let me leave you with this hint:

My 2 cents: you want EFI. You'll have all the latest technology in the kit. What's to decide? Stick with the latest technology in the engine bay. I'm with Jeff on this one. Of course, I'm not an unbiased observer, as I already committed in that direction...

What did everyone think of the 20th anniversary Mk4? I am planning a build but have seen very little discussion of this special edition.

A little off topic from my thread, but I'll respond. It was just announced last week, with the final details last Friday. So it's not surprising there hasn't been a lot of discussion. It was unveiled last Thursday and then again Saturday at the open house. I like it. Obviously, I signed up to get one. It's a complete kit PLUS a bunch of options. Some specific to the anniversary edition (gauges, badges, brakes, special powder coating, etc.) plus others that will be available with regular kits. The 18 inch wheels have caused a bit of a stir. Some like them. Some don't. Personally, I like them a lot. There will only be 20 anniversary kits but actually only 18-19 (not positive) available to the public. It's a good value IMO if you're looking for a high option complete kit build, including the new IRS. I just talked to FF today about a detail with mine, and they said they're about half gone. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they're gone in the next few days.

Gee Jeff, that's a little too subtle for me. Could you make it a little more obvious. ;) That is one of the choices I'm thinking about BTW. Just not sure.

So, both you and Jeff are thinking about the Acme engine? I mean, that's the go to supplier for 'ol Wile E., right?

What say you Sir?

EdwardB,

Although not surprising to us that's have followed your great work on the Mk4, it nevertheless is most well deserved and a great honor to your incredible skill and attention to detail.

Sincerely,

Carl

i hope that you will soon start a new build thread for the anniversary edition build. I can imagine that it takes great commitment to do the work, take the photos, then report it all on this forum. We appreciate your efforts.

I would be very interested to know several things:
1 after two successful builds, what have you learned that you will repeat on this new project?
2 what have you learned that you will do differently? Why?
3 I would love to learn your build plan as it develops. Mine has changed more times than I can count!
4 You were complimentary of King's Tilt front modification. Any chance you are contemplating a tilt front?
Again thank you a for your insight and wisdom. I look forward to learning from your next project.

I'll do a build thread again for the new build, but not until the build actually starts. I'll be picking it up sometime in early August. Probably not quite as detailed as 7750, but I have fun doing that too, so we'll see I guess. It's really early in the build plan process, but a couple of responses for now:

1. Same: Power steering (massive thumbs-up), FFR 2-piece spindles, front mount battery and cockpit mounted master switch, RT turn signal, RT gas pedal, RT dead pedal, Lizard Skin insulation, heated seats (not negotiable with my wife), glovebox, carpeted trunk, cooling fan shroud, hydraulic clutch, HD firewall, mechanical throttle linkage (if needed...), Breeze rear view mirrors, ********** grommets and Q-J tubes, CNC reservoirs, Liberty's upgraded TKO600 (awesome), expanded PS footbox, GAS-N side pipes (probably), footbox ventilation, something electronic on the headlight circuit again vs. relays. I have the American Autowire setup on 7750, and so far is working great. But not available any longer.

2. Different: Won't bother with a sound system. Like it while parked and even in the garage. Don't like it while driving. It can be loud enough to be heard, but then too loud in cockpit plus for every other car around. Won't bother with a trunk light. Two builds, and don't find it very useful. Not worth the extra wiring and switch installation. Will reclaim all the space above the tank in the trunk. Only reclaimed half in 7750. Smaller trunk in the Mk4 needs as much space as possible. Won't do power assist with the Wilwoods. Works OK, but unnecessary complication. Definitely will put an access panel in the DS footbox. 7750 was before FFR made these part of the kit, and I chose not to go back and add. A bit of a risk, but won't do that again. Engine driven PS versus the electric pump setup in 7750. The EHPS setup works great, but there was a specific chain of events that resulted it that. Will just do an engine driven pump on the new build. Probably will go with a more authentic use of the oil cooler opening. Maybe PS cooler? Maybe adjustable seats. Looking at Stainless headers vs. FFR supplied. A single big difference with this kit is I will be the first owner. Both of my previous builds started life with another owner. The Mk3 was a roller with no drivetrain when I bought it. The Mk4 was barely started, but some work was underway. In both cases, I re-did some/most of what had been started. But still some choices and work was done that I didn't change. This time around I will only have myself to blame.

3. Detailed build plan is just getting started. First step is to finalize engine choice, because I have to confirm with FFR before my kit goes into production.

4. The tilt front is very cool, but won't be happening with me. I'll leave that kind of heavy duty modification to others who are more adventuresome than me. :D

...Engine driven PS...

If you ultimately go the "Wile E." direction have Ron share the details of his super simple pump bracket. BTW, his just completed Coyote powered Mk4 will be at the FFR display in London so that should give you a chance to get an up close look while pondering your decision. Whichever way you go with this one it will be a fun build to watch!
