Love the new additions. I especially like the headlights. Details for retrofitting to harness built for production run 818 headlights? Also would love to see some pictures of headlight output at night.
Are the new front fenders wider? They look a touch wider than the original fenders.

I like the fenders, lights, and brake vent. Undecided on center portion.
I noticed it has the STI 6 speed as well.

I like the coupe, but I'm not sure if I like the front end all that much over the old one. I like some aspects. It does look like they increased the area so outside of the tires do not rub the lip (maybe wider/higher). Tires rubbing are a constant issue on my car at their stated ride height and wheel ET.
One of the elephants in the room will be how hot the drivers compartment gets.

I like the new design. Especially headlights. ....but I was really hoping for something to have been done about the seam between the front fender and door. Look at a GTR or Subaru WRX. The side vents could have been functional. And a sidemarker/turn signal is a must.
bbjones121

Actually, this new design has no visible turn signal from the side of the car. Is that allowed?

I really want to know the official word on the weight penaly for the coupe over the roadster. And has the new shape been wind tunnel tested? It seems like it would have a lower COD.

I am not feeling the new front end but love the hard top! Might order that as an upgrade.
The front end does look like it will be easier to assemble. Keep up the good work F5!

It looks like F5 has done a great job in addressing the complexity of assembling the front end. This should help in the frustrations builders are having putting the front end together.

The coupe is very nice, hats off to FFR! Haven't decided on the front yet. Since I'm a long way away from putting the body on, I'll hold that as another option I can choose at a later date. I'm a big believer that the world needs more 2 seat roadsters so I'm sticking with that, but very interested in how the AC get solved.

I think they really knocked it out of the park on this one.
I liked the 818 before but the front end was way to tame for the car, and looked dated right from the start. The Camry lights never really looked right. The top in stylin' too.
If I wasn't building a coupe already this would be high on my list.

how is the engine compartment sealed off from the drivers area on the new coupe? a wall? cover?
Sorry. Removeable as in the entire top. No targa option/design. Changing from a roadster to a hard top is going to be about 3x more time-consuming than with the 33 hot rod. There is an inner cockpit bulkhead and window that separates the driver from engine compartment. Still, I can see this as a change-over twice a year for those wanting to use both set-ups (roadster in warmer months and coupe in colder months or vice versa in warm climates!).
A quote from Dave in another thread.

Factory did a marvelous job on the design! It gives a "massivier" look to the front end and the front feels less squashed, the car looks more like a one-of and very special car.
One flaw, just one to me, the headlight buckets don't seem to include integrated side markers, which makes them non-legal for Canada, so you have to add side markers somewhere by yourself, which is what I'll have to do.
Are these lights designed just for the 818 or they come from an OEM car?
Are there LEDs in the headlights? Halos?
So... now what do I do with my old fenders, bumper, OEM Camry headlights and aftermarket Spyder Camry headlights? :)
07FIREBLADE
06-13-2015, 05:58 PM
I wonder how people get the GTM registered then. The front buckets seem to be a modified version of the GTMs lights. If those can get passed then the 818 should be doable.

Well I made a slight mistake, I mentioned Canada but actually I should have said Provinces. Rules depend on State/Province/Country, in Quebec Province they are clear that you need front/rear side markers, but what do they actually do when you get the car inspected? Maybe they let it go. I could probably check with the rare ones who built and registered a GTM in QC, or those with a MK4, I know one.
All in all, I need that front end. :) It looks easier to fit too, as the bumper is part of the fenders and then there's an insert in the middle. I guess it uses the same front carbon fibre splitter. Can't wait to the individual parts prices and how the headlights light up.

I would have thought the three globes on this side could be used as indicators? Here in Australia we would have the same requirements. Have they released the 818C kit price yet?

I've been staring at the photos all day and it looks better and better. It looks to me as if this hard top was created over 2 years ago and then they kept it locked up in a closet until now. The lines of this coupe top fit into the body too well to be an afterthought. Yeah, that's it, a conspiracy!

So...I was there today and The car looks absolutely stunning in person. It looks great in The photos, but Simply unbelievable in pictures. It's like a whole new car. I will definitely upgrade to this front end and top once I'm at that phase of my build.
I asked a few questions about the car today. Here is some of what I can remember...
- the top will have a liner that will resolve into a firewall to separate the engine compartment from the cabin, but they ran out of time to design it for open house, so interior pics won't help much yet. It will probably have a glass window in it for rearward visibility. They have this in the GTM already, so creating one isn't a new concept.
- the LED bulbs in the headlights can be configured or are configured (don't quite remember what he said there) to include a turn indicator.
- the car just got wrapped up yesterday afternoon in time to unveil it today, so some parts weren't 100% complete. All of the glass, for instance, was still being made, so they used lexan for the hatch, light covers, and rear 3/4 windows.
- the coupe will retrofit to all Street models, but it won't fit with the Race roll cage.
- the running gear for this car came from the blue and white 818R that they used to have, so it's got an STI 6MT and a strong 2.5L motor. I hope we get to see this thing out on the track!

It would be cool if the center piece had different styles. Just thinking ahead, my hood hinge won't work without an opening in that part, and I want both. lol.
The headlights remind me of Ferrari F12 lights. Hopefully they actually fit as well as they appear to in photos unlike the camry lights.

Since FFR posted the pictures this morning, been going over and over the pictures on FFR's website.
Right off I noticed the difference in the front fender flares. The front fender flares are wider in diameter and more in proportion with the rear fender flares.

That's exactly what I am going to do. It's just another thing that adds up to the list and it's a (small) step back cuz with camry lights they were there. Sad to improve and have a step back, but I like so much the new nose that I have to buy the parts. :)

Coupe price is 12,990
Inspiration was Ferrari 599 (they had a poster handing above the molding area where they designed the new front).
The new headlights are 3D printed, not OEM. There is a marker light inter grated (though ones in the mirror would be an awesome custom addition.
There is a "bulkhead" like the GTM with glass see through in the new 818c.
Best guess is 100lbs penalty. Top is pretty light (30ish), glass, power windows, mounts, headliner and grill insert add some weight.
This car must be seen in person, it truly is outstanding. They booted the GTM outside to showcase (3) 818, that speaks volumes.

I love the look of the coupe roof and might order one, it would have been nice if it had a separation at the top of the windshield to pop it off and put the rear deck on for summer (Canada) also I like the idea of the trunk even if it was small to put a few small bags or car cover when going away for the night somewhere. it looks like the trunk is not an option with the coupe unless the rear deck opens to get at the trunk.

Side marker or front marker?
I do have mirrors with indicators, might do the trick on that, although my province's rules aren't clear on how and where. I'll take the chance. :)

Front marker but it is in the same place as the GTM so maybe it will fly. Mirror markers would be a nice addition either way.
The trunk "will" work with the couple according to Jim (the designer).

Yeah, definitely inverted which gives the gtr or Evo X feel. It'd be much easier (I assume) for third parties to make different inserts vs new whole front bumpers. I'd love to see a 599xx looking insert.

I did. What do you want to know? The headliner/firewall hasn't been integrated yet, so it's unfinished, but there was TONS of headroom. Way more than I have in my 2010 MX-5 or my 2007 Forester XT. Legroom, hip room, etc. is unchanged from the roadster.

The door length and roof height look like they would make it tough for someone 6'4" to get in and out.

That's promising. I am interested in the headroom and how well a full cage would integrate. I was hoping there would be some shots from the inside.

I sat in it. I was surprised by a few things. I'm 5'10" or 1.78m btw. I found the seating position to be too low, the steering wheel was too high, and there was headroom almost like in my jeep wrangler (that means like a foot of space around my head). Getting in and out was difficult but mostly because of the seat having such high supports on the side of the bottom cushion. It's not that much lower than my beamer 135. The pedals fit me fine though. With an OEM style seat, I'd raise the seat and either use a removable steering wheel or at least a tilting one.
Btw, the coup does look great. The lights are ok. I actually prefer the ones I have (spyder). The rear hatch opens , but I'm not sure why. There's no real space there to put anything. They didn't have the windows in there but they did have the window racks/motors and they cut the holes for the glass, although I saw no weather strips. I think they just finished the shape. The details are still in the works. Would I buy the conversion? Nah, not because it's not cool, but because I want a targa top. I'm going to attempt to make it myself, but I'll probably use their window kit. I like the targa top on the porsche 918 and on the ferrari 458 spider:

Some people already fit the vintage air ac/heat unit. I am working on mine now. You can mount it below dash support beams or I am going to rework them so my vintage air unit fits higher under dash.

Doubt it. I'm 5'11, torso longer than some. Our 818S has race seats slammed to the ground & the old fuel tank. There's barely length for my legs, and my helmet is barely under the rollbar.

Great. any idea on how it help/hurt weight distribution and cornering performance??
Half tank of gas (7gal) is about 50 lbs. I moved the battery to back.
The front of the 818 is very light. I prefer to add the weigh to the front.

Curious - did FFR change something on the side inlets (the ones behind the doors) or simply cut the openings bigger instead of using that mesh and aluminum trim? I was thinking of simply cutting the openings bigger and will be quite pleased if this is the end result.

Hi David
I actually have lots of storage in the front.
I am going to add a large foam block in front (like a 30 gallon cooler) as crash protection and internal storage.
My main radiator is in the rear. The small radiator you see is for my Awic. I will be adding a duplicate radiator for the air-water-oil cooler.

Bob, soon as I read this post I knew there was something familiar about what you were saying. So I went back and checked some older posting in some of my 818 threads. Said to myself "oh yeah Bob is the one who asked me to mockup some rear venting for him and said why" :)
Now that I see the smaller rad in the front, you do have lots of room.

Love the new front end and top. Did they open the rear hatch? can you actually work on the car from the top or do you need to do everything from the bottom with a lift like a cayman?

They told us at open house that the new nose will be an upgrade on the R and S, so I think that means it'll be more expensive. Dave did say he'd try to make it an affordable upgrade for current owners. But they also said the new headlight parts are a lot more expensive than the existing headlights, so I imagine it would have to be an upgraded cost option for new buyers to get the Coupe nose on an R or S.

So far nothing on the website. I'd just like to know during which month they plan on releasing the price for current owners and ready to order. I have to plan my next build steps I don't want to start spending time on the old nose but if they plan on releasing the prices in September, then I have to organize something to start the body before even though I wouldn’t be able to align panels with the fenders.

I ordered an entire 818C, not just a hardtop, and I have no idea what pricing will be on replacement parts for guys with the original bodies or when they will be available. The coupe is priced at $12,990 before options.
No exact word on timing. My confirmation e-mail repeated what Dave Smith has already said -- production begins in August and delivery dates to follow. My e-mail said to expect further details around that time.
I know I was in the first handful (four or five) to plop down a deposit on the 818C when the website opened for those orders. I don't have any idea how many they have backlogged that they are working through.

Frank, you'd have to ask the factory to be sure. But I think by inference, the answer is "both" as far as manufacturing. Sales may be another matter. The 818C is being shipped ONLY with the new bodywork, or so I have been told -- that implies that by August they will be making the hardtop and the new front end. (Actual shipment dates are unknown to me -- the exact quote from my order confirmation e-mail was as follows: "Production for the Coupe is slated for August and we will be contacting you then to put you on the schedule.")
I have no idea when there will be spare front ends to ship as upgrades to existing 818S/818R kits, or if they will over-produce those and try to ship them simultaneously with the new coupe. I don't know how much of a backlog they have for 818C orders after the announcement, and I don't know how many hardtop-only orders they have for 818S kits. Hardtop apparently will not fit 818R.

I really like the new front end, and hardtop. Awesome.
The new nose I see some strong influences from the popular 'catfish' design contest entry, the one by Xavier.
Regardless if you like it or not, I expect most would agree it certainly looks a whole lot less kit, and whole lot more car now. Very OEM look. This is perhaps the highest compliment one can give to a component car.

It looks more like a special high end one-off concept car, which means it will attract even more attention, which means I want it even more. loll
Speaking of which, the new nose will be available to everyone at the same as the 818C normal orders (not pre-orders) and production, so let's aim August for now.
I am SO damn lucky I haven't started body work yet! Something tells me this new nose will be a lot easier to fit, it looks like it, hopefully it is. I'll deal with the side markers I need for inspection that are not on the new nose but are on the old headlights (Camry's). I prefer to fit side markers than having a lot of issues fitting the bumper, fenders and headlight buckets.
07FIREBLADE
06-25-2015, 07:26 PM
Side markers shouldn't be too hard to implement. It's a heck of a lot easier than the current front end. I want the new front so bad just don't want it to cost an arm and leg to get. The top is a stretch but I get where the price comes into play with all of the components you get with it.
Hopefully the new front will come in for half the cost as the top but I don't know yet. If memory serves I remember a guy on here trying to get a replacement front bumper and it was going to cost a fortune from the factory. Hopefully they do a pre order or give a discount for guys who want it that already ordered a kit. Something that falls in line with the upgrade cost for the new parts for new buys of the S or R. Only time will tell though.
Frank818
06-25-2015, 07:59 PM
I remember that guy, he hit coming off (or in) his driveway if I recall. Hum, 475? Was that the cost of the bumper?
I'm sure FFR wasn't selling bumpers alone a lot, but they will sell quite more the upgraded front nose, so that may help to reduce cost. Plus, the bumper is now a plastic insert or something? Maybe that helps reducing costs too.
I say between 1k and 2k, mostly at the 1.5k mark. :) Shipping's going to kill me, though.
If they sell the base kit for 10k+the hard top at 3k+the nose at 1.5, that makes the 818C kit at 14.5k.

...and then your old, unused bumper can be sold to someone with an unconverted 818S (or R) and gets in wreck. If they live driving distance to you, they would probably be willing to pay the full $750 price (that FFR would charge), so they don't have to pay $350 or so for shipping (plus have to wait for it to arrive).
Your old fenders, etc would probably be spare parts gold as well.
