View Full Version : Charcoal Canister Safety Inspection Question

Maryland requires kit cars to pass a safety inspection. Among the list of points they are supposed to check is whether emissions equipment is present and working.

I was wondering, is it realistic to expect an inspector to go hunting for the charcoal canister? Or do they just check to see that there's no P0447 or other error code indicating the canister has a problem?

I ask because I haven't got the canister installed, and I took a few minutes at lunch to remove the error checking for the P0447 with a Cobb Access Port. Do I need to mount the canister for inspection? (If need be, I could run some dummy lines to it that disappear into the engine somewhere, I guess.)

Depends on the inspector. I've seen others get failed for it... can't remember who but it was someone on the forum. If it were me I would put a canister in and plumb it to an evap valve, even if you don't have the evap valve working.

I am planning a canister but I'm not using the Subaru OEM one. I found a GM Truck canister with two ports that I will be using. One line goes to the tank vent and the other to the connection on the manifold. I will have the purge solenoid, but I removed the rest of the evap sensors and solenoids that are on the tank on the Subaru. The canister will be mounted in the corner of the engine bay where FFR suggests you put the main fuse box. This is the canister I used: ACDelco 215 75 (http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-215-75-Original-Equipment-Canister/dp/B000C9N9J8/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1432754011&sr=1-1&keywords=ACDelco+215-75)

I was planning on using at miata canister (just because I heard they were small). Wasn't sure where to vent it. Which connection did you vent it to?

It's the bottom of the three connections on the driver side of the engine. There are three connections there, one for fuel to engine, one for fuel return and one for vent.

I considered the miata one as well, but they were more expensive. I don't know the size of the miata one, but the one I got is about 7" tall and 5" in diameter.

Larry, does that vent line run directly into the intake manifold or to the purge control solenoid? I'll make a note of the canister you found for my build.

It goes to the purge control solenoid. Mine is connected at C in the diagram below.

Be careful not to break #3 if you disconnect lines from it. The plastic is brittle and it's expensive to replace.

I don't know if this is of interest. The link below is how some boats are done.
The vent valve stops raw fuel from making it to the canister.

This guy that built a cobra did a DIY charcoal canister for the fuel tank. Here is a link to his site. It looks pretty good.

I used a scooter canister I bought on eBay.

That's a cool idea.... I may use that myself.

I used a Yamaha scooter canister, it even has 2 nuts welded on for easy mounting

If you put in a small canister and hook up the purge line, does the P0447 CEL still pop up?

I would assume that unless you use all of the factory components you will have codes

Will a non-OEM one pass inspection?

We are using the Subaru charcoal canister.

I don't see why they would require OEM charcoal canister and allow an alternate cat.

The New York form has this checklist:

From what I read, I simply need something that satisfies the definition, not an OEM part. Of course, your state might be different.
