I'm buying a used 4.6 and trans and rear off craigslist from an individual, what do I need to register the MKIV once it's built? Receipts? Copy of title?

Every state has different rules. Contact department of motor vehicle in your state.
I am from New Jersey and have their regulations.

Exactly. Every state is different. As a minimum you will need some kind of receipt or bill of sale. You may or may not need serial numbers of some kind. Also it may be important if there is a donor car or salvage title involved. At least they asked me about that in Michigan. Check your local regs.

I'm in Texas, and they are most likely salvage title. So nobody can use parts from a salvaged vehicle?

Oops, sorry. No I worded my statement very poorly, and corrected it. What I was trying to say was in Michigan (and I suspect others states might be similar) they wanted to know if a donor or salvage was part of my assembled vehicle, as apparently I would have had to show some additional documentation. But it's done all the time. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

You can't be too carefull. I would want a bill of sale from the seller w/ the serial numbers included and a copy of the title w/ the same name on it as the seller. Otherwise who knows where he got it from.

Proceed very carefelly. In Mass. you would be out of luck.

Call the DMV in Texas to be sure, I think you will be fine with bill of sale

I wouldn't rely 100% on what the person at the DMV tells you. Depending upon how complex it is to register your car in your particular state, the people at the DMV may or may not have any idea. Verify whatever that person tells you based on regulations, statutes, the DMV website, etc.
