Does anyone have any info / advice when dealing w/ a town office that is oblivious to the Maine custom vehicle reg (or other states)? They are stuck on the fact that it was originally titled as a 2005 FFR roadster, but I custom reg'd, (with the appropriate affidavit for the St of Maine) it as a 1965 Ford Cobra. Now they wanna renig & make me reg it as a 2005 FFR.

The best thing to do is look up the laws and rules yourself. Make copies, and take them with you.

Few states will register a kit car as a '65. But I meet people who occasionally get theirs registered like that as a mistake.

10-4, I did just that. Maine states, "The registration must indicate the year & make of the body of the custom vehicle resembles and must indicate that the vehicle has been modified." Custom reg's in Maine print that out right on top right hand corner of the reg. I've numerous versions of the same law all in print & brought them w/ me. Maine also has you sign an affidavit stating that this vehicle is a custom, etc & you must keep a copy in the car at all times. I'll get it worked out by April when the reg comes up again....

This really varies from state to state. For example, Wisconsin registers replica vehicles as the year of the car they replicate. Thus, my roadster is registered as a 1965. Further, by being titled and registered as a 1965 vehicle, the roadster must comply with safety and emissions standards of 1965.

I would start here: http://www.bipac.net/semaga/TagTitleToolbox_ME.pdf a9but it sounds like you already have this down (but it won't hurt to double check.) I've had to educate a DMV clerk or two about California's ridiculous reg requirements (not to mention a few LEO's as well.)

Good luck,

Ray

If the car was previously titled, the state of Maine will issue a "like and kind" title with the previous title information listed. If their system spit out the VIN as unreadable or unrecognized in their system, then you could have had the car retitled as a 1965 with a new state issued VIN applied to the chassis. In your case, you are stuck with the 2005 designation.
