5/23/17: Pictured below is the first CF version of the scoops. These are an overlay. I want to produce these in a vacuum bag setup due to the tight angle changes. Just wanted to post a teaser for now because they look pretty awesome on the 818. :)

Im offering side scoops for the 818S and 818R for sale. They are available in a black gelcoat finish or white.
First set has gone to C.Plavan for installation and feedback.
The price for a pair of scoops is $375 plus shipping.
Please PM me with questions or to place an order.
I will only be producing 5 scoops sets at this time due to other obligations. August or so i should be able to produce more.

Unfortunately, they're going into storage and the 818 is getting wheeled out of the garage this weekend as an epoxy floor goes in. Hopefully the improved digs will inspire me to spend more time in there and finish the build.

How do the scoops mount? Do they have to be fiberglassed on pre-painting?
wleehendrick
07-20-2016, 10:36 AM
I haven't mounted them yet, but Stan provides them with two mounting studs/nuts glassed into each scoop. You could glass them on for a seamless/show quality look, but drilling two holes into the sides sails, and adding a bead of silicone/RTV, should be sufficient, and all I plan on.

There are 4 mounting points for each scoop. These scoops do pull a large quantity of air and that can be felt by putting your hand inside the scoop while driving but no where near what it would take to rip them off. 1800 miles so far with speeds of up to 120mph without any issues.

You mean wrapped?
What's your definition of overlay vs wrap?
This was actually carbon fiber fabric that was layed up with epoxy over a black set of scoops followed by 3 coats of clear, cut and polish.
07FIREBLADE
07-31-2016, 01:04 AM
I have no problem taking a set of defective ones. I don't need them to be perfect carbon fiber. It's going to be better than the stuff ffr provides anyway.

Wouldn't that be too thick for the opening, they fit pretty well.
Wrap would by vinyl... I understand the term overlay. Great idea to try it!

I have not fit this set into the factory panels as of yet. I know they won't fit up as tight as the molded pieces but the fitment should still be pretty decent. This was just a test run to try the concept out.

Kirk great idea, testing at several different speeds,ex 10,30,45,65 MPH. I am more interested at lower speeds such as city driving in an 818S.
I noticed while carting at 30-45 MPH going with the wind. The cooling fans would kick on this is the only time they ran. Leads me to believe the engine compartment must also be getting hot during this condition.

I plan on performing a test with and without the scoops at set speed increments and provide a spreadsheet of the results. The gauge is able to show Cubic Feet /Minute results which i think will be the biggest indicator of functionality.

(8/29 EDIT - See Post #65 below for more accurate data)
I was finally able to perform some testing of CFM air flow with and without the scoops. My cut out was larger than most so craft paper was used to cover and funnel the air flow. See photos.
Graph shows air speed in CFM as it relates to vehicle speed (Labeling is wrong on the X,Y axis). Since air flow fluctuates a little with speed, the average CFM was taken for each speed.
I just noticed from the photos as i was writing this post that the test with the scoops did not have direct flow towards the meter (as you can see in the photo). I think this may have caused some turbulence and will have to correct the issue and retest at some point soon.
I also posted a photo of my intercooler temps just outside my turbo and just prior to entering the throttle body. They stayed pretty constant at a little over 100*F with ambient temp at 95ish degrees.

Kurk818

Tony, i was wondering that same exact thing. I may have to make an inner scoop/duct setup for 4" and 6" ducting. There is definitely some air volume there that can be of great use for our application.
Do you know if FFR intends to sell their inner scoops as an option?

I think it will depend on the feedback that they get on the scoops, so I may be interested in getting a set of yours if they will still mount since I have the internal scoops

The front mounting points will mount without issue. Looks like the 2 rear mounting points will need to be installed through the Ffr piece. Your original edge body line is in tact. You won't be able to tell you have the inner scoop when the outer scoop is installed

Captain, what does it mean a speed of 5000? 5000mph? lolll 5000in/h?

25mph is the last time the cfm readings are close.

Cfm was based on the area of the fan.
Great let's say I'm not an aeronautical engineer, if the results were multiplied by the area of the inlet, like three or four times and the graph paper was removed, is it safe to say the air flow would be 9000-12000 CFM at 60 MPH? I'm curios because your basically choking the outlet to the size of the fan. Knowing the velocity will be higher but also at a higher pressure against the fan. Without this restriction I believe the duct will flow a greater amount.
Can any engineers out there confirm my suspicion?

That was my original theory and reasoning for having such a large cutout behind the scoop. Better utilization of the volume of air that makes it into the scoop will definitely be helped by an inner scoop. (Which will be built in the future)
Kurk818
08-28-2016, 05:38 PM
Would air speed be a better indicator rather than cfm? Then multiple by area of inlet to get cfm.
DMC7492
08-29-2016, 07:34 AM
The area of the duct can be entered in the meter, and saved. the fan could be mounted in the opening of the scoop and then entering the square inches of the scoop in the meter. The read out would be CFM going through the scoop. This along with the craft paper removed my get the best results.
Kurk818
08-29-2016, 10:40 AM
So i need to clarify some of the data that i posted. While trying to provide data sooner than later, i did not fully understand the Anemometer and air flow as it relates to this test. The meter had a preset area of 160 in^2 (1.11 SF), of which all of the data that i posted in the previous post reflects.
Below is a table showing the data based on actual surface area of the opening for the scoop as well as 3" and 4" duct opening (which is what an inner scoop would more than likely have. The X axis would be the MPH and the Y axis being the CFM. Ive attached the data used for the graph to show more data points.
