Registering a roadster in TX?

What does it take to register a roadster in Texas? What about emissions? Vin numbers?

go to txdmv.gov then drop on motorists in upper left corner, next click on register your vehicle, the drop down on the new page you will see on the right side in a box assembeled vehicle manual, click on it. a pdf box should appear in lower left corner click on it go too chapter 4, click on it and read it very carefully. keep and get all receits for all parts good luck mrb oldschool

I have looked at them and I can't see anything that talks about emissions, can I run a carb, or factory fuel injection?

Mine is titled and registered as a 1965. No emissions tests required.

So, you should do your own research to confirm (or refute) this, but:

In Chapter 2.4 of the Assembled Vehicle Manual, it says, "This inspection is required in addition to the Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle safety and emissions (if applicable) inspection required under Transportation Code, Chapter 548."

Chapter 548 of the TX Trans. Code has section 548.051 that requires that all vehicles pass an emissions test. Section 548.052 has a list of exceptions to the rule, but I don't see one that includes an assembled vehicle, a replica, etc.

So, I think you need to pass the emissions requirements of new vehicles. I looked into registering a replica in Texas a few years ago, and I remember having come up with the same answer.

I didn't look into this, but I noticed a section that mentioned that new (even home built cars) have to meet some safety requirements as well. You might want to check into this as well. (As "freedom loving" as Texas is known for, they do not make it easy to build your own car.)

The process has changed since I registered mine. Since HB890 passed, now you register it as a Custom Vehicle. No emissions required.
