View Full Version : Bonding parts to fiberglass
What is everyone using to bond metal parts to the Fiberglass? I have the 3M High strength stuff. I used this on my Roadster.

3-M Panel bonding adhesive. Stay away from the Evercoat stuff.

We've been using the 3M 8115 panelbonding adhesive. It's a bit expensive, but one tube can do a ton of projects. You wouldn't need to buy the $70 gun to go with it......you could just push each piston the same amount out onto a chunk of cardboard and mix it by hand......we mix most of ours by hand here anyway. It's excellent stuff and I've never known it to fail. You can even bond metal parts together.....like louver joints.....and then have them powdercoated and the heat from powdercoating will not damage the 8115. It's also nice in that it sands smooth like body filler.
I've also used 3M 8219. It's made for bonding FRP parts. I've bonded metal parts to fg with it, and when you try to peel the metal part off of the fg, it takes fg with it. We don't use a ton of that since it never gets rigid-hard....it stays sort of soft and flexible like plastic, and you can't sand it worth a crap.

I used all west system epoxy ( 6/10 bonding filler tube for voids and bonding) since it is a vinyl ester resin body and epoxy bonds well to it. It has done the trick very well. $20 a tube is the best deal going and you can use a regular caulk gun. I have used the 3m 8115 etc, and it's good too, but the epoxy is even stronger. Both are a great solution

We build alot of waterslides and have quite a few applications where we bond Aluminum or Stainless to the fiberglass.
We use Loctite H8000. Works great, and isn't affected by water.
Lots of examples out there that have been out there for years.
Thats what I'll be using.
comes in a kit with mixer tube, gun etc.
