I kinda like the look of it unpainted, what have you guys used to protect the metal from rusting? Is there a spray on product that won't chip or peel after a year or so of year round cruising?

Thanks,

Andy

Some guys have used a product called Sharkhide (http://www.sharkhide.com) on bare aluminum, I think that would work on the steel of the column too. I would imagine you could also paint it with clear coat if you wanted a little more protection.

Thanks Jay, that Sharkhide is a good idea. Think I will give it a try, just use it like wax a couple of times a year.

Take some pictures once it's installed like that. I'm still in the planning stage, and that does sound like a good idea. :)

I clear coated mine and after a few months, it started rusting. I ended up priming and painting. Holding up much better. Sharkhide may be the answer but I have never used it.

Here is mine with the clear coat

My only concern with sharkhide is that you have to reapply it regularly, or so I've read. That looks good Brent. too bad it started rusting on you.

I might try sharkhide for a while to see how it wears, and like you, if it starts tarnishing or rusting, I'll paint it.

Why not paint it with clear paint?

Eastwood has a great product called ExoArmour, that works on both aluminum and steel. It is clear and reacts with the metal, leaving the metal in it's natural state. It isa two componet product, and costs $54.99 for about 3 or 4 ounces, but it goes along way. Follow the instructions precisely, no exceptions!
