Factory Fives new trunk insert

For those of you that haven't seen it, here is the new trunk insert.

This is the assembled unit. It comes in 3 pieces and needs to be bolted together.

Very nice piece that went in without much trouble. The only downside I see to it, is that they have you bolt the front edge to the engine cover. You will need to remove the bolts in order to service the engine.

What modifications (if any) would be required to bolt it to the rear shock brace as Jim has suggested? So that the rear engine hatch can be opened without removing bolts?

It can be done, but its quite a distance away. Just guessing, about 3-5 inches. Not really even close to that area.

Craig's brace could be used to hold the front edge up, it runs under that area...

How much space is there between the transmission and the bottom of the trunk?
And in your opinion will it seriously affect air flow around the engine?

About 1.5 inches. I know this because I propped it up with a 2X4. I think it will seriously affect air flow. Pretty much the air needs to go down and come out under the trunk through the lower vent.

I have serious concerns about this too, especially if you have a stock air to air intercooler. Voiced my concern in the Body & Interior thread ....copy below

I am no expert, but with the car fully assembled how much air actually gets in the engine compartment anyways? The only access I see is through four small scoops in the body. The bottom of the car is pretty much closed off.

That is true if you install the optional rear diffuser, otherwise no.

Open up the side scoops and trash the perforated metal grills and the 3/4 wide "trim" Add side scoops (Craig, CF scoops needed ;) add a fan to create a low pressure area) Replace the rear grill material with something that has a larger open area and the airflow under the trunk should increase dramatically. I'm also going to install a heat shield over my muffler and I'm planning my own trunk...

The under belly (under engine panel if running the rear diffuser) is a great place for NACA ducts, much like what VRaptor has done for the GTM (see http://vraptorspeedworks.com/naca-duct-belly-pan-small-trapezoid/ ) (http://vraptorspeedworks.com/naca-duct-belly-pan-small-trapezoid/), this would be just a insert panel. Along with the side louvers that VRaptor has for the 818 you will get plenty of air in, now the issue is to get it out, the area where the license plate goes (between the tail lights) becomes a primary source for exiting air.

The area between the trunk and rear panel actually seems like it would be fairly large actually. 2 to 3 inches? and ~8"? high? a cross section of 16-24 sqin? That is about the same as a tube between 4 and 6" diameter duct.
Looking at it closer; it looks to be tapered all the way to the bottom of the trunk. The distance between tail light body and trunk body increases the lower it goes.

I'll get to see if my license plate vent frame works. :)

Mike, what's the max weight you would be comfortable with putting in that trunk?

They way mine is installed, maybe 30-40 pounds evenly distributed. Any more that that and I would add a fixed mount on the bottom surface to the frame somehow.

Remember also, that the perforated grill material that FFR supplies flows very little air. I ordered replacement material from customcargrills.com that flows 77 % and comes powder coated gloss black.

Rori's shifter arm for the K and N mounts up instead of down. Does it look like it would clear the trunk? Thks.
