Rebuilding small block oil pump

How do I get that pressed in spring retainer plug out? I have a new one so if I have to use a drill and slide hammer it's okay, I just want to know if there's a better way.

AFAIK, that's still the preferred method. Once it's apart, you can drill and tap for a pipe plug.

I used a self drilling tek screw and then pried it out with a screwdriver.
