Cleaning Used or Donor Parts

I was wondering how used parts are prepped for installation. I noticed a salvage rear end that looked terrible and then in next picture better than new on a Jeff Kleiner build. Also I'm concerned that the aluminum on the intake, alternator, its mount, and the tensioner look terrible after years under the hood. Once they are clean how do you keep them looking fresh. I could buy replacements but would rather put that money aside for upgrades. Hope I don't wear my welcome out asking all these questions.
