I recently received a set of your Roadster Sun Visors. Two questions.

* I can't get any of the little screws which hold the mounting brackets to the windshield frame started in any of the 8 holes. Could the screws be the wrong size? What thread/pitch are the holes in the windshield frame?

* Are the screws that I received the correct length not to crack the windshield if they are correct and I do manage to get them installed? Lots of reports that the screws may be too long. What should the max length of the threaded portion of the screw be (below the tapered head of the screw).

Thanks!

The screws will start hard. They tend to be tight, as they lock by interference. I can't remember what size and pitch they are. Likely 8/32 or 10/32. I had the same issue. Don't expect to get a machine screw fit. Mine worked out fine and I had identical
concerns. If they really wont start due to plating at the frame, take a tapered tap and run the first several threads only.

Any reply, Factory Five?

Thanks.

You would think they would show more interest in their own forum...

The size is not listed here in our documents. We are checking with the supplier.

Thanks, Brian.....please let me know about the "safe" length also.

Appreciate it.

I went through this recently. The screws that worked for me are 3mm x 6mm. I used an automatic pencil as a depth gauge and filed the screws a little shorter than the exposed pencil lead (depth). I had a piece of scrap thin aluminum strap laying around and I drilled a hole that was similar in diameter to the screw, then I countersunk the hole so that the head would be just proud of the top of the strap. I clamped the aluminum to my workbench top with the screw head toward the workbench top. Since the head was slightly higher than the aluminum piece the screw is held very rigidly with the thread end exposed so that it can be easily filed. This works well for the screws that hold the side straps to the windshield too.

Unless the supplied screws are different then what came with the visors a few years ago, you need to shorten them slightly, (or I suppose you could use a small washer). Past posts on the FFCars forums, have indicated that these screws can cause cracking of the windshield, if they extend in to the frame to far.

Definitely a pain to start in the hole. There are so few threads actually holding the screws, I also used a dab of blue locktite, to ensure they would stay in place.

To bad they can't design a set of visors that use a set screw to hold them to the frame, similar to the newer wind wings. That would save some headaches.:)

The small screws have a #6-32 thread. Like Bill said you need to be careful not to crack the glass while tightening the screws. The threaded portion of the screw is around 1/4". The screws can be tough to start as they have to go through some of the chrome.
