I'm trying to install the rubber boot and need to remove the shifter knob. I see two small holes on the underside of the ball head but upon inspection it does not appear there is anything in there. Hand torqued the knob but its on there good.

Any suggestions?

I ended up covering the knob with weather foam strips then using a pipe wrench.

Thanks for confirming it was a twist off solution.

Why didn't you just unbolt the shift arm?

I did that, that's how I was able to inspect the bottom end. Incidentally if you were thinking just slip the rubber boot over the arm at the base that is too wide.
