View Full Version : Carburetor conversion "choking" me!

I have a 670 street avenger, 4150, vacuum secondaries. It was slightly used and purchased from a fellow forum member. It came with the manual choke installed and the parts from the 45-223 electric choke kit were in the bag of stuff that came with it. I'm doing the conversion back to electric now but I'm stumped by something. The choke body has a port with a small cork gasket. I think it is supposed to be a vacuum port, so I assumed that the carb body would have a boss to snuggle up against the cork gasket, which it does. The issue is that the boss is not drilled. It appears to have a lead plug in it. Am I supposed to drill it out? there also appears to be a vacuum port on the outer part of the choke body. Do I not drill and use the exterior port?

Great question. I will look forward to an answer. If my carbs electric choke had vacuum pulloffs, I would probably not have converted to manual. OE carbs always had some type of pulloff. There are times when the carb is near full choke but you need to get over 1500 rpm. W/o a pulloff the things goes pig rich. W/ a pulloff, it will be much closer to a decent mixture.

Old Guy...see link to choke conversion instructions for the electric choke kit noted ( http://documents.holley.com/199r7972-5.pdf )...IF you have found the internal vacuum port it should not be plugged. the external screened port on the choke is the inlet...the carb will draw outside air through the choke body. It would appear that the previous owner(s) plugged this port perhaps to address what was believed to be a vacuum leak? Confirm that this is indeed the choke vacuum port and remove the lead plug but make sure it is not a plug inserted to close off port drilling during manufacture.

It's definitely the right port that matches up with the vacuum port on the back of the choke body. It had a black foil "cap" stuck over it but behind that it was plugged. I'll drill it out and if it's not right I'll re-plug it.
