Hey everyone!
Been a long time since I posted, and I return with a few questions as I am looking for some insight into a problem I'm having with my GTM.
During the last drive of the season last October I noticed a loud 'rattle can' like sound coming from the engine bay. It decreases in frequency as I slow, just about fades away when I engage the clutch at speed, and increases to a rapid buzz at high speeds.
Finally got to digging into it tonight and pulled the valve covers. Disconnected the coils and turned the motor over a bit to rotate the lifters to see if we could see anything amiss and immediately heard that clicking/banging noise coming from the transmission/starter area, in time with the rate of the engine trying to turn over. I don't recall ever hearing that noise before when I was trying to get the engine to run back when I was tuning it.
What we initially thought was an engine issue we are now thinking may be a trans. issue. Pulled the starter and hooked it up to power and spun it and engaged the solenoid: checks out fine, no odd noises. Can't really see much through the transmission 'windows', but it looks like the back edge of the clutch is 'worn' - maybe from rubbing against something (hard to say though from the limited view we have).
Transmission is a G50/52 with LSD. Has anyone had an experience like this before? Any potential insight into it before I resort to pulling the trans off, etc? A friend has a scope we will use to get inside there and look around, but I thought I would post here for some feedback.
Additional question that is related: this summer while trying some harder than normal launches (launching at 3k+) the clutch would slip bad. I never really launched the car that hard in the previous years so I can't say if its slipping from the clutch being worn, or if its from the motor just putting down too much power (625hp/575ft-lb, na). It's a stage 2.5 clutch -no slippage at speed or under rolling acceleration, etc. Clutch options that I should look at for holding the power better if I have to pull the thing apart anyways?
