Although I asked for non-abs 8.8 rear axle when I called the wrecking yard, they delivered on with the abs brakes. Will this work or am I going to have to get it replaced. Thanks

It will work but it is slightly wider than the non ABS rear so be aware of that when selecting wheels with the correct back spacing / offset.

You could have the ABS rings removed if you don't like the look of them, although they are pretty well hidden. Depends if you leave the dust shield on or not. Many remove them altogether front and rear. The sensors (if still attached) can easily be removed as well.
I don't know what model you are building, but the 3.1, and I expect the MKIV, are slightly wider in the rear body at the wheel openings, so you won't be restricted to much using wider tires, even with the longer axles. Your only looking at 3/4" per side..

I appreciate the info. I have already bought the 9"Halibrand 17' wheels. They should work, don't you think?

I think they should work fine.

You need to measure the rear end and the wheels. I doubt they will all fit. JMHO, Richard.

Listen to Richard. '94-'98 rears are wider than the pre '94 Fox era units and the '99-2004 are wider still. You can't just throw a blanket "fits or doesn't fit" statement over the subject without knowing the wheel specs and the flange to flange axle width.
Good luck,
Jeff

First listen to Richard Oben as he's the authority on axles and wheels! But, before you trash the ABS I think you should think about using it. On my Mk3 I kept the ABS and it really worked well, saving my butt and front damage when a Prius stumbled out of a hidden driveway. In these light cars ABS really helps reduce locking up.
