View Full Version : Electrical Relay "Buzzing"

I've never had a relay for my turn signals and consequently, the turn signal toggle switch keeps burning out. I am in the process of installing two relays (right turn, left turn). Problem is that when I activate the turn signal switch the relay starts to "buzz or click rapidly, almost as if the contacts are cycling. What would cause this to happen. I'm fairly sure the relay is wired correctly. All grounds are good. Would a battery with low voltage cause this? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, low voltage would cause what you are seeing. Most relays would pick up fine at 9v or so. But the lights coming on could drop the voltage just enough to make the coil drop out, lights go out, voltage comes back up, coil picks back up. over and over.
The control side of the circuit should be straight forward. Power to relay coil, coil to turn signal switch, switch to ground.

I think there is something else wrong here. No way two bulbs at a time should burn out even a cheap switch.

I'm thinking the relays are wired incorrectly. Here:

You may have a short circuit somewhere. Check your wiring to the bulbs. Pull all the bulbs and insert each one-at-a-time, retesting after each bulb is re-inserted. Wouldn't hurt to throw an amp meter on the line to check for over-current as you test.
Maybe we should ask, what are the relays controlling, the bulbs before or after the flasher?? Are you using one or two dash indicators - with or without diodes if just one. A simple wiring diagram may help us to figure out what is going on.
