I'm trying to minimize exposed wiring in the engine room. Here's what i am planning. I'd appreciate feedback.

Alternator to Battery through 2 feet of 6 gauge and a 100 amp fuse

Battery to starter through 4 feet of 2 gauge (do I need a fuse here? amperage?)

Starter to fuse panel feed through 3 feet of 6 gauge and a 60 amp fuse

Ignition side of switch through clutch safety to 40 amp relay (energizes starter solenoid).

Junction block and starter relay are behind dash.

Some similarities to how I wired my Mk4 main power circuits. Several comments: (1) Fuse not normally used in battery to starter wire. (2) Fuse also not needed for the feed to the fuse panel. Each of the individual circuits are fused as appropriate. (3) No mention of master disconnect switch. Suggest you add one to your plan.

I agree with edwardb. The fuse to the starter won't accomplish much because it will necessarily have to allow a very high amperage. It's likely to be more of a trouble spot than anything else.

Also, get a master disconnect. If your battery is in the engine compartment and you're trying to reduce wire in the engine bay, you might want to consider one of the disconnects that attaches to the post of the battery.
