Hi all, I am new to this car building thing so please bear with me. I have a chance to buy a chev 350 and transmission out of a 1990 truck. both need to be rebuilt. I am trying to figure out what stuff to use in the motor rebuild. I see you can get rebuild kits from Summit but there is so much choice I don't know what is best. I was also thinking of replacing the cam at the same time. So what I would like to end up with is a motor good for driving around in as racing days are over. Thinking 330-350 hp is lots at the fly wheel. What it looks like is important as well so looking at chrome pulley sets with serpentine belt. I like the look of carbs but can be talked into fi as long as it looks like or similar to a carb. Chrome all the stuff I can.
What do I need for carb/intake, cam, rebuild kit stuff, etc. what else do I need to look at. If possible part numbers as well please.
Thanks

Welcome to our madness Marten. When I was looking at motor options for my 33, I too went the SBC route. I have always built my own motors for my projects. However, the cost of prebuilt and guaranteed crate engines made me take another route. I went the 383 route as opposed to the 350, small price increase for big torque gains. By the time I added in machine shop costs and my time, it did not make financial sense.

You can get them fully dressed or a simple simple short block. I would be glad to help you either way you decide, build yourself or buy assembled:

I bought mine from Skip White Racing. He has fairly high HP motors listed on his site, but builds smaller ones as well, here is a link to their 383 kits:

Buying a fully dressed engine takes a lot of the guess work out of what will work with the base motor. Just food for thought.

Thanks Jack
That is what I am thinking as well. I found some real nice motors on e-bay for $4000 from a guy called superstrokers. Talked to him this week and he seems to be building them right. Now if the dollar would work itself out so I don't loose 21% that to would be a big difference.

Hi Marten. Are you from Canada? If so where? I am from Niagara and I know where you can get small block 350 running condition.

Marten, if you review my blog I have a number of trials and errors there...and a couple of vids of the motor starting on New Years day.
