View Full Version : What's with the long tail?

I am wondering what is the purpose of the section extending past the rear wheel in the profile view. I understand the trans will extend rearward but is it that far?
It is really making it difficult to wrap my design around it. If it could be shortened slightly, it will help a lot.
Thank you!

It's the transmission. If you look at this rough diagram (http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=showphoto&photo=engine%20plan%20dimensions.jpg) the transmission from front axle to tail is longer than the engine!
Yeah, it does suck. No getting around it though.

is that with the transfer case mounted on the trans, or with a block off plate?

I don't know. Sorry.

If would think that is with the tail snout and all judging by the profile.

the long tail has some advantages, for example more room for exhaust system - possibly transverse muffler. Also potentially room for a side mounted radiator unless the chassis won't allow it.

I don't know, but I'd guess from looking at the picture that it's the whole trans incl. rear transfer case. How accurate are these measurements?

transverse exhaust will be necessary.

My very rough measurements from the design template suggest that there are 27" between the wheel centerline and the end of that big box on the template.
From the diagram above (quality unknown), the transmission is 25" from axle centerline to the end (whatever is at that end).
Pretty sure that box is the transmission.
You can either guess that FFR got the transmission dimensions wrong and you can move that box, or you can guess that FFR got the transmission dimensions right and you can't move that box.
I guess it depends on how loose you're being with your design: some people see this contest as design the final product, some people see it as inspire the final product. Up to you on where you fall within those two ideas.
And no, I have no idea how accurate those measurements are.

The problem I have with the provided templates isn't the length of the proposed transmission location, but how high it is. The Subaru trans horizontal centerline is about 3" above the axle output shaft location. The drawings show it at least twice that.
Of course, I'm not opposed to an exposed transmission with the right overall design.

On the Lamborghini Gallardo, the transmission is exposed.

It doesn't look that bad, and we'll be in good (design) company. :)

Besides, this way, everybody behind the car will know its mid engined. :D I'm hoping the final design will allow for a plexiglass engine cover, so we can show it off. (I'm assuming the intercooler will be relocated, but even if it isn't a partial glass cover would be nice as well. )

Lots of race cars have exposed transmissions, the only issue I have is if someone decides to use yours as a bumper during parking lot or race-track maneuvers. Much easier to replace a few chassis tubes than a transmission.

so...... basically still at the same place I started. :D
With the tail housing removed, the longest point is the tip of the shifter rod, about 21-22" behind the rear axle, without pushing the engine forward too much, this is what it is-----> design around it and incorporate the transaxle as form/function
