View Full Version : 4.6 SOHC No Start Help

My mod motor has suddenly decided that it doesn't want to start. Battery is good (12V with key in RUN and ~10V with starter turning) and the starter spins well, but engine doesn't fire.

I suspect it might be a fuel delivery issue because I'm not hearing the fuel pump whine when I turn the key to RUN. The fuel pump fuse is good. The inertial switch red button is pushed in.

Engine specifics: 4.6L SOHC from a 2001 GT. Donor (engine, wiring, and fuel tank/pump) had 46,000 miles when I got it 6 years ago. My cobra has been on the road for 5+ years and 8300 miles with no problems.

How do I check to see if my fuel pump is dead?
What are other things I need to check (CCRM, Fuel Pump Control Module, PCM, any other modules?)?
Are there other, non-fuel delivery issues that could be the problem?

I would check for codes as step one.

Thanks, Craig. I forgot to put in the OP that I checked and there are no codes. I have 12V all the way back to the inertial switch and the inertial switch is good, too. So, either my pump has croaked or the pump driver has croaked. I think I'll have to lower the tank to check the module since I don't have an access panel in the trunk. Fun, fun!

You can try spraying some gas into the intake and see if it fires. This would tell you if the fuel pump is the issue. I had a similar problem with a 2000 4.6 that turned out to be a glitch in the anti-theft program. Engine had spark but would only fire when I sprayed gas into the intake. Required replacing the computer to solve the problem. Good luck.

To continue the troubleshooting story...
I checked power coming out of the fuel pump driver module and there's 12V coming out, going to the pump. Also, I applied 12 v directly to the pump power sockets on the pump's connector and got no pump noise. So I concluded that the pump was dead.

Dropped the tank and replaced the pump. Put it all back together and my cobra is happy again. So am I!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Can you let us know the make and model of your short lived pump please?

Craig,
I'm pretty sure it was the original 2001 factory pump.
