Well got a good start to the car,

All the front aluminum is fitted, all the dead pedal pieces and side aluminum have been fit and drilled. all of it was dropped on for powder coating as well as a few suspension parts. I am waiting for my finishing kit (Canadian customers) as well.

I have gotten the front aluminum painted and installed.
Installed the pedal box and masters (with some swearing)
made a bracket for the throttle pedal and mounted it.
Installed the throttle cable.
Installed the steering column (pressed sleeve and shaft, home made aluminum adapter plate (not as nice a RoRi's)

Now working on mods to recess the shifter (like Jamie's) and recess the parking brake handle.

Oh and my theater room is now full of 818 parts, all the body, door panels, windshield, windshield frame, a big box of aluminum and all the boxes of parts! the wife loves it!

excuse the pics with the tape on the pedals that says dont push, I have fluild in the masters!

All of that in a week?!?!?!? Looking great.

Todd, nice gas pedal mount, it just gave me an idea. I was thinking of soldering the mount or pedal, but I was waiting until I fit my undercarpet and all that stuff to make sure the pedal is properly align. But you removable mount is great, I'll try to do something similar. Are the bolts on the mount and frame going through both sides of the tube? If not, you tapered the hole and then screwed the bolts in?

Lumpyguy

I just used 5/16 tek screws, It shouldn't take a lot of load. If it works free I will rivnut it. I just did not want to do rivnuts as the bracket would sit ontop and not tight to the frame.
I did not weld the inside joints so it would sit up tight to the tube.
I beveled the outside corner to get a full penitration weld.

well I have gotten some more fabing done, the electric parking brake is done just need the tank in before I hook up the cables and wiring. I got the rear suspension on minus the coil overs

I have started the roll bar mod, I got the roll bar off and the chassis ground down. I cut and welded the 2 ends together to make a hoop that has all the same measurments as the old bars. I am gonna take it down next week to have the local race shop bend up 2 hoops for me and give me a piece of straight pipe to replace the cross piece.

Nice customization! What did you use for an electric actuator for the parking brake? I don't like my parking brake handle position and am researching alternatives.

Wow, that is awesome! Awesome...

Lumpyguy
12-21-2014, 09:23 AM
I just used a 2" stroke 275 lbs push/pull 12 volt actuator and fabed up brackets and adjusters. It works really well. still need to do wiring and a switch to let you know the brake is on. I am gonna tray and use the stock e-brake wiring and light on the guage cluster.

12-25-2014, 10:07 AM
Well I got the hoops made up yesteday, they could not do the hoops in one piece :( no one around could do more than 90deg bend, they could have done 2 bends with a slight flat spot on the top but the angles would not have matched the OE on the ends. I had to use 2 of them butt welded together and added a plug in between. she welded up and ground down nicely. only thing left is to make up the diagonal pipes for between the hoops for strenght. This will make a nice looking mod thanks to Aloha for the help and idea!

Lumpyguy
12-26-2014, 01:40 PM
Here are a few pics of the finished product minus paint. LOL I must have done something wrong I made a diagonal bar for the passanger hoop and it fit perfect in the drivers hoop as well! I guess everything is pretty close!

Its real hard to commit to cutting up a perfectly good frame but It needs it for the looks, I would kick myself if I didnt do it

If you have cut off wheel, grinder, welder, time, someone to bend up the steel (mine was $200 with tubing, bending, sluggs, extra piece of 1 1/2" OD 3' long) and most of all patience!!!!! to measure and measure, take bits off an a time and make sure all the measurements (double check triple check) and tack weld good so things dont shift when welding.

here are a few picks cleaned up with paint (POR 15) It lays down nice and looks like powder coating.

Very nice! Did you do it because you like the look better or because you needed more height?

Lumpyguy
12-26-2014, 08:53 PM
nope totally done for looks and I love to fab! all the measurements were done to the same as the single bar, the end bars have the same angle as the single bar and the hieght is the same. the single bar is good but the 2 humps in the fiberglass on the rear engine cover beg for 2 humps on the bars.

Cheers

Nice job Todd. I like it. It's nice to be able to make it visibly "your own", I would say.

For anyone looking at home painting or touch up, check out the KBS Rustseal lineup. I think it is a bit better than POR15. It's a one part epoxy and it also comes in clear coat. I've been thinking to do some of my aluminum with the clear, for anyone wanting that look. They have a rust remover and cleaner as well. All are excellent I've found. You can only buy it online I believe. I recommend several small cans over one large can for preservation reasons. (I have no affiliation, just like the product)

Cheers.

Lumpy, what did you do for prep? My POR repair of powdercoat flowed like crap, I need to sand and re-apply... perhaps it was too cold?

Lumpyguy
01-25-2015, 08:20 AM
nothing special, I keep my POR inside the house. I stir good and decant just what I need. I painted my stuff at the end of the day after the heater had been running all day in the shop so the steel was not super cold. painted on with a brush and it lays down nice. only problem was dust and dirt getting in it. but where I painted it is not reall visable but it does match well with the powdercoat.

just make sure to paint past what you need to down to a joint as it blends better than stopping in the middle of a bar.

Thanks, I'll mask off and re-do it in the spring, Right now I never heat the garage to over 50 or so, I'm so cheap I squeek!

70 degrees Dan, that's the proper min temp for Por and most chassis saver type paints. They can be applied in some colder temps but the result is sub par.

Lumpyguy
01-27-2015, 10:16 AM
Here are a few pics from the start of my console, It will be all closed in with thin sheet metal and covered in vinyl to match the dash and door panels. I was going do a floating console from the rear and have it fully open from the shifter forward but as I started this seems to flow better with the dash style.

Looks good. I was thinking of doing a floating console as well. I want to give the passenger a few places to hold on. Maybe i will only expose a little section of tubing.

Awesome idea. How is it mounted to rear firewall?

01-27-2015, 12:46 PM
Great design, Lumpy. Curved surfaces help look production rather than kit car. You've given me some ideas for improving my console. Thanks. I look forward to your next photos.

Lumpyguy
01-27-2015, 06:01 PM
I am using thin walled 3/4 steel tubing. I welded flange nuts in the end of the tubes and drilled holes thru the bulkhead. then just used bolts from the engine bay side.

Lumpyguy
01-30-2015, 03:47 PM
Ok here is an update on the center console with a few pics. I have all the steel work done just some clean up grinding and holes for shifter, cup holder and a few switches.

For the racing guys where every ounce counts ;) I weighted the console. stock one was 5 Lbs and mine was 18 lbs so I have added 13 lbs to the car. For me this is fine I am not looking for super performance I am more about making a nice looking car. and this console looks out does the FFR console.

Looks very nice!
Do you have enough room for your elbow when shifting?

Lumpyguy
01-30-2015, 05:10 PM
I have lots of ideas for other things to do all over the car, I am just trying to get all the major welding and modding done so I can clean and paint the car chassis again, then start assembly again. my shifter is a little farther forward than most so it works good.

Frank818
01-30-2015, 05:15 PM
This is awesome. You got a machine to fab alu?

AZPete
01-30-2015, 05:28 PM
THAT'S why I love this site! Creative designs and the fabrication skills to pull it off. I'm looking forward to your next photos.

Lumpyguy
01-30-2015, 05:38 PM
I do not have any machines other than a grinder, cut off tool, Mig welder and a Tig, Oh and a hammer! I am great at tig welding steel and can do aluminum but not as good at it. also I have no argon gas now only 75/25. so I am mig welding the steel.

Lumpyguy
01-30-2015, 05:40 PM
My plan is to wrap the console in Vinyl to match the padded dash and door panels.

Lumpyguy
03-01-2015, 10:32 AM
Well after waiting for clutch and flywheel and some brake parts I was able to get a few more things done over the last few days. this will be it for a few weeks as I am going to South Carolina for 2 weeks. I put the engine and trans together with 2WD conversion, built the driveshfts, made brake lines and installed the brakes, made PCM mounting panel, installed the the rest of the suspension waiting on an end link for the sway bar.

391753917639177391783917939180

And I was able to finish the final adjustment of my parking brake, its a 2 inch stroke motor and the first 1inch is dead pull not touching the cables and the next 1 inch is the apply. so at full travel of 2" the actuator stops and the brake is fully applied (So Its is not over streached)

Lumpyguy
03-01-2015, 04:03 PM
I was at the store and found these Stainless steel 1 Liter water bottles and they were only 4.99 each! so I got 3. one for a washer bottle and 2 for coolent over flows (front and rear) I will clamp them to the frame and run a hose thru the top.

03-28-2015, 02:30 PM
well it has been awhile but I got a few more things done. most of the motor is hooked up need to finish turbo and and intake stuff. the next big task will be to start my harness diet and install. I finally got a chance to put the wheels on and roll it out of the garage for some spring cleaning and organizaion. excuse the 4x4 under the shifter I was just figuring location as it will sit on top of my new console. the wheels and tires are not what I am using they are just to push the car around. ops blurry pics

I like the brake line routing. Red, huh? Looking good.

I have a question. I think you have the coolant tubing kit that Michael Everson (http://www.replicaparts.com/) sells? Except for the logistics and impossibility of shipping long pieces, do you think you could have almost all of a complete side of cooling tubing welded together and eliminate a half-dozen hose joints?

Lumpyguy
03-28-2015, 10:37 PM
my coolant tube kit is one that I pieced together with rad hose and aluminum tubing, I was trying something different. for all the hose, clamps and pipeing it was less than 200 bucks. If I was to buy mandrel bent pipe and the cost of welding i could have bought a kit.

Looking good. Any more progress on the interior redesign?

Lumpyguy
03-30-2015, 08:00 PM
no not much lately on the interior, I am working on how to mount Waynes shifter inside the console so I only have main body and lever above the console.

I am goin to make new interior door pulls that will mirror wayne's shifter ( Flat aluminum with cutouts like the side pieces of the K-Tuned shifter) also some sort of door open mech as I dont like the looks of the stock subaru door latch handle. dont think I want poppers, maybe some cool mechanical lever off the door pull handle.

Lumpyguy
04-03-2015, 06:33 AM
well I want to send out the console soon to get covered so I had to finish the fab work for the shifter, I made a new mounting plate for the shifter and cable mounts and put under the console so I only have the shifter on top. I think it turned out nice. once the console is wraped in vinyl to match the dash and doors it should look good.

I like how your console sweeps up to the dash instead of flat plate aluminum. I'm thinking of doing something similar.
Whats the ABS canister for near the fuel fill? I guess I missed that post.

Lumpyguy
04-03-2015, 03:12 PM
sorry might have missed that myself, the ABS canister is a carbon cannister for the fuel tank vent (something to suck gas fumes)

Well its been a long time but I have a car almost ready for Go Kart stage! after alot of work doing the diet the electrical works! and the engine started right up but ran rough (did not have MAF in and injector Oring leak) fixed all that and she fired up and ran great and on her own!

Are you worried about your exhaust rubbing against the bumper panel at all? It's a pretty tight fit there.

Looks really good Todd. I love the custom mods. What brakes did u get? Rotors? Getting exciting!

Lumpyguy
08-16-2015, 05:50 PM
No I am good on the bumper clearance, it sits in the opening where the mesh/screen would go. I built it all with the side sails and bumper on the car to make sure it all fits. I just need to put a bit of insulation tap in a few spots to keep the potential heat away from the trans and body. I have not finished the tail pipe yet till I know if anything hits while driving.

Lumpyguy
08-16-2015, 05:51 PM

First run is in the books! and its was really sucsessfull! after a few runs around the block to feel the brakes and steering I did a big dump and spun the hell out of the tires! only a few things to work on (engine codes) and a few more runs to make sue! I just had a victory beer!

also my AP fell out of the car on a corner and was dragging beside the car! LOL

Frank818
08-18-2015, 08:13 PM

Well I am away for work for a few weeks but I thought I would pre fit a bunch of the body to let it sit in its shape for a few weeks. As everyone has noted there is a lot of fine tuning when setting up the panels.

Well its been some time since I posted anything, I have been busy with work but have taken the last 2 weeks off and finish opening up and widening the side vents and cutting out all the other vents, cutting in the 3rd brake light.

I cleaned and sanded all the panels, primed each panel with 3 coats 2K high build primer, sanded each one and re assembled then all to check that all is still good. now time to remove and put in the basement till paint time.

I remember why I hate body work!

Well it was another good day in the garage today, I was going to order the FF wiper kit but then thought I could make my stuff work. fabed up everything with a little guessing and measuring and surprise it works. I did have to cut off just over and inch across the back of the hood but it dressed up nice and will put a little edging on it after paint. I also made 2 support brackets on each side of the motor to support the hood.

Some how I must of had more space between the hood and wind shield as I didn't cut.
My nose might be a little extra forward and my windshield is all the way back.

Lumpyguy

sorry it took so long, here are a few pics of the fuse block and the wipers done. Also I got the exhaust all mounted and welded today. Just an FYI only the L side exhausts the Right side are fake tips so I can have a nice looking exhaust that comes thru the bumper and looks factory and even.

Nice exhaust work. Are you going to add tips?

The fake outlet could be made functional with a QTP electric cutout. I have one of these on my saabaru and have considered one for the 818. https://www.quicktimeperformance.com/OVAL/

What did you end up with for the length of the wiper link? I'm thinking that I can use a threaded rod in between the ends and make it adjustable. Your center to center length would give me a good starting point.

Lumpyguy
02-22-2016, 08:14 AM
Thanks, the center to center I have is 5". I just used the stock linkage and cut it down to a 5" center to center and welded it together then bent the ends a little so the sockets lined up with the ball. It will be more than strong enough for sunny day to day. My car will not be seeing ice and snow to jam it up.

I missed the sneak preview photos of the paint - love the color! It's the same color I've been wanting for mine, though I will likely do a wrap first to keep more immediate costs down. I can't quite tell from the pics above - is it non-metallic? What's the color called? Any shots of the completed paint job? Very excited to see what it looks like!

As for the paint it is called Cyber Gray Metallic. It is a GM color on corvette and a few of the other models. It does have metallic in it but is hard to see it in the pics.
It also looks a little lighter in the sun.

Its funny you mention cost. I did all the body work to prep, sanding, mods, fiberglass work, and primer. I just had a guy from work spray the base and 4 coats of clear for 1500 bucks! all panel painted. now mind you the whole thing has to be color sanded to remove a bit of fish eye here and there and a lot of dust nibs (not the best paint booth setup)

here are a few pics one is of the color on a corvette

Sorry guys, I have gone away for work for a few weeks and have not got a chance to work it. it is all done and laying in the basement. I was working the mesh before I left, I got the octagon flat black mesh from customcargrilles.com it makes the vents look like the car is OE.

alot of hours fitting and reworking edges to get it just right, making the vents bigger and moving the gas cap was the biggest time consumer.

Thanks

Very nice! The gaps on the body look great and even too. I remember that pic when you cut the rollbar and welded your new one, you've gone a long way since! :)

Great idea that 2x4 to strenghten the winshield in case of a rollover. :)

thanks for the idea on the black walnut, It will just blend right in! yes its coming along but still a ways to go, a few more things on the exterior and then I can drive it more then close up the interior.

Would you let me know where you bought the brackets for the trunk? Or, did you actually fabricate them yourself? I just noticed them in your recent set of pictures.

Thanks

Lumpyguy
05-19-2016, 07:03 PM
not sure what brackets you see but the aluminum ones with the holes in it are from Michael everson of replicarparts. check with him or do a search for engine cover hinges.

I like your side mirrors. What are they?
Also, I bought the quick release hood pins like you, but what did you do to extend them. Looks like you welded to a 1/2 in threaded rod so you could adjust height?

Looking good.

Lumpyguy
05-21-2016, 05:11 AM
Thanks, as for the Hood pins there are extended with a welded on bolt and they work pretty good.

And as for the mirros they are CIPA mirrors, they is a place in Port Huron MI, I actually found mine at a Princess Auto store in there surplus section for 12 bucks each. It comes with colored bulbs and you can wire the light up as a signal or running light. I did the signal with amber bulbs. It looks goog you can see the signal on the glass side of the mirror as well (small lens)

update. Its been a really busy summer with work and family stuff so not much got done. now I am going away for work till Christmas but I did get most of the interior together and its is coming along great. I am wet sanding it and polishing it next week before I leave. this winter I am gonna get the paperwork/licencing stuff done and build a few other trinkets to finish for the spring. the pics are a little old as the whole interior is in but I have not done updated pics yet.

thanks guys, the door panel inserts, switch panel, shifter plate and cup holders are real carbon fiber. i bought a finished sheet of carbon fiber and cut it up. I also made some carbon fiber 5's for hood emblems and fender emblems.

Frank

I cut up the ones supplied by factory five to build a filler piece and rivited it to the frame. turned out pretty good.

today I got lots of wet sanding done and hope to actually get it polished this week before I leave.

Shawn you are welcome to pop in anytime if I am here I travel for work a bunch. As for driving it. I have been driving all around the neighbor hood for awhile now but I will probably wait till the spring and get the safety done and plates on it. there are a few things to make and do this winter, splitters/windscreen for behind the driver/passenger, bump steer, install bluetooth amp and speakers.

Ok so I am sure most of you have seen the finished car but I wanted to post a few of the finished pics and close out the build blog, It has been a great 2.5 years and to finally be at the point that i will have it on the road and enjoy it is awsome. I hope anyone interested in building a car to do so and use this forum as part of your building tools. there are alot of great people and ideas on here, maybe sometimes to many good ideas that can cost you more money! but great ideas.

the last thing I picked up was a factory five steering wheel and adapter last week and am installing now and it to will have a small carbon fiber 5 symbol in the horn button

If any of you are in or around the London/Strathroy Ontario Canada later and want to take a peak feel free to drop me a line.

Also there is a video from the london speed show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cia8jaAUjP8

But the rear end is great! The muffler and tips. :)

Well after some time I am going to resurrect my build thread, I have a busy winter coming up. the future plans for the next 3 months are to do the complete coupe conversion (thanks Howard aka HOJO) and to do aftermarket camry headlights, carbon fiber overlay on the top of the roof and possibly a new center console (not sure the old one can be removed if need be now I will have a roof) the plan is to have it at the London speed and custom show here in Ontario for Mar 2019. again I will be posting pics of the process. I got the roof and components home yesterday. and today I will start the tear down to do the build up.

my plan it to build it as a full time coupe and not switch back and forth for coupe to roadster.

again a big thanks to HOJO for running the roof to buffalo it made the drive much shorter. look forward to seeing your build and welcome to the 818 family.

stay posted

Here is the first go at the mod. I have the roof fitted and adjusted. Installed the carbon fiber overlay on the roof and did the first layer of epoxy. I have been toying with the idea of having a removable roof section around and along the backedge of the roof scoop ducting
Kind of a nice day open of closed section to let the sunshine in
Also note I got the carbon done in a pattern down the center.

well it has taken some time for me to sit down and write this up and put in pics. I finally got the coupe conversion done last month, still working the head liner and a few small things but it is complete. I am not super happy with the power windows I with they were not so flimsy and sealed a bit better but they so work. I love the new look of the car and it is much better as a coupe but harder to get in and out of for sure. they carbon overlay on the roof was a great hit. not sure whats next for this car might be time to move on to the next project. cheers
