I bought an unfinished MK4 kit a month ago. I'm still in the re-do stage with some of the things the previous owner did, but I'm almost ready to get started with the real construction. One of my concerns is the overly-complex fuel system. I think the original plan was for the car to be carbed since the Jeg's electric pump is internally regulated at 6.5 PSI. However, it's plumbed with a bypass regulator and a return line, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I'd like to just go the way I usually go and just use a standard Ford mechanical pump, eliminate the regulator, Jeg's pump and the return line. I'm not sure if I can leave the canister filter on the suction side of the mechanical pump or if I should relocate it to the front X-member. Maybe I'm missing something, but I figured I'd get steered straight if I ask here. What's my best course, strip it all out or leave the electric pump and add an inertia switch? The regulator and return line are going for sure.

I subscribe to the K.I.S.S. philosophy also Joe and would be on board with a mechanical pump given that your plans don't call for needing an extraordinarily large volume of fuel. You'll want the filter on the pressure side of the pump, not the suction side.

If you are going the mechanical route, take out all of that stuff and move the filter to the pressure side like Jeff said.

the orig owner may have been going for possible future EFI and was placing the thing for that now cause harder to install later. that is the way I plan on doing my future 33HR build.
but if you are a carb guy only then if I were you take it out

Ron, let's just say I'm being deliberate. It took me 3 weeks to undo some of the stuff and get the rear end narrowed and redo the brakes and yadayadayada. I've been spending some time on the motor and packing/shipping the stuff I sold off. I'll be kicking it up a notch very soon.

I used a Carter external electric pump back by the fuel tank with a 100 micron Holley inline filter (more like a strainer) on the pump suction and a 40 micron Holley inline filter on the carb inlet. That was all per Holley recommendation (called tech service). -6 PTFE hose on flex joints with 3/8" hard line from back to front along frame tube.
