I started a build thread and had this in my first post but feel it would be better to separate this out.

I plan to rebuild the engine. What special tools do I need to make the DOHC 4.6 rebuild easier? I know about the cam tools but any other speical items? I'm first time on a Mod motor as I was a LS guy up till now. I plan to get some things done to the trans as well while it's waiting to be installed.

I had looked into changing the intake to a carb style intake with fuel rails (sullivan or similar) to mount a thottle body that will allow the cobra dual carb style air cleaner. What other items do I have to change by going this route? Is it just a matter of a custom tune? stand alone EFI computer?

I have been looking for the 4V valve cover that looks like the old style cobra valve covers as well. I saw Sullivan had them but discontinued. Any other places to get this? I thought about getting some custom aluminum plates that were finned and then paint the cover with the black crinkle paint from Eastwood.

Thanks

Not sure if you are still looking for answers on this. I rebuilt a 97 dohc with new forged pistons and rods. I also swapped to the 04 cobra heads. The only tool besides the cam tools are a "funky" spring compressor and solid lifter so you can set the bank to bank timing. These are not really necessary if you use the factory camshafts As you can just use the keyway alignment to do this.

I dont have experience with a carb conversion but i think you could call Sullivan. You may also find info on the svtperformance boards.

There really is not an aftermarket for the valve covers that I have seen

Morning Chief, MM1/SS Anthony reporting for duty. Well that was a few years back. I served 10.

Anyway, I loved my DOHC Cobra when I owned one. 7000 rpm shifts sound so nice. I seriously considered going with a '96-'98 Cobra donor for my project but I went cheaper.

For DOHC engine parts you really should seek out Sean Hyland Motorsports in Canada. He is pretty much the guru of DOHC mod motors. They are going to have everything you need. I hate recommending a non supporting vendor, but I don't think any vendors really offer the items you are looking for.

Thanks guys! I have the block at the machine shop with the crank and heads. I'm just having the machine shop redo the guides so don't need the spring tool. I do need the cam tools though.
Will be calling Sean Hyland soon. MMR racing has a ton of stuff as well for the 4.6.
