This is a 2014 document the DMV gave me. It is the clearest "story" I have come across.

It looks like none of that is applicable, since it is not a replica of any production car.

Freds, I was under the impression that we need to follow Chapter 2 of the same document.

Correct for the 818; the problem being that you will need to get the safety and emissions inspections done every year, which may or may not be a problem.

For a roadster or coupe, you could follow section 4 (and specifically 4.3) and be exempt from all inspections for ever more.

The key word for getting it titled under Chapter 4 is that it must "RESEMBLE" some older vehicle. Get creative and try, there is nothing to lose and no inspections to gain. The kit doesn't have to be labeled as a replica, you have to follow the guidelines with photographs and make your case to the DMV.
