It is next to the obdII port
Do I need to keep it?
What is its purpose in life?

If you are talking about the 6 pin connector, one use is to check ABS system fault codes and reset the system (clear codes and turn off light).

It is B79 on an 02 wiring diagram gray 14 terminals don't think they are all used, and yes an internet search says you can use it to check ABS but I'm not using ABS.

B79 Check connector has 14 pins. Looks like 2 Blue, 3 White, 6 green/red are for air bags. 9 brown/white and 10 light green/red are ABS. 8 black is ground and 7 green/black is power from fuse. 4 orange and 12 light green/black go to engine control. Anybody know if we need to keep 4 and 12?

I don't know but left it in.
I deleted ABS, security, etc, and figured that if I need it in the future, its there.
