View Full Version : Wheel bearing seal question

Kind of embarrassing that this is tripping me up, but I'm really scratching my head here.

I'm replacing the front wheel bearings and seals and after installing the wheel bearing, when I go to install the outer seal (prior to pressing in the hub) it doesn't seem to be in there very tightly. I'm used to pressing in seals and having them sit very tightly in their housings (unable to be removed unless a seal puller is used), but with this, while it does go in with some friction, I can simply press it in with my hands and can pull it back out with just my finger. It won't fall out on it's own, if I turn the spindle upside down and shake it but it just seems odd that I can pull it out with moderately light pressure from my finger. I feel like it will work itself out on the road while driving - or does the hub simply keep it in place?

I have quadruple checked and cross checked that I am using the right seal for my hubs: Timken 710463.

Thanks in advance.

You're fine, once you press the hub into the spindle, the seal will remain in place. I used subaru bearings and seals and they felt the same as you're describing. The inner part of the outer seal makes contact with the rounder corner radius of the hub, which will prevent the seal from backing out.
